OK I'll rephrase my statement If I had a case of 30 weight good quality engine oil in my barn I wouldn't be afraid to run it in the engine of a JD 2030 which was built in '71-'75 not 70 yrs ago.

i'd check the oil api rating.

Drove down and back today. Long trip. It will be good to get the tractor up here.

Got the oil sample, checked oil level and hydraulic fluid level, added fuel conditioner, added sca/dca to radiator (just in case), ran it, PTO works, and tire held air. I put a jack under the frame in case it goes flat again. They were not loaded. Just need to get it moved up here.

This is also in the barn. Any idea what it is? Need to decide whether to bring it along.

Thanks for all the help.

Looks like it could be used as a 3 point fence post puller?? and if there is nothing else on the 3 point i would hook it up and transport it mounted to the tractor.

I have a slightly newer JD with 9000 hours and it only has a slight amount of blow by. So you will be good to go if that is any indication. Those old girls are classics, I would like to have one.

Agreed, I have no idea what it is, but it would make a nice stout 3 pt base for something even if you never used it for what it was intended to do (if you ever figure out what that was) ;)

I've never seen a device similar. I agree it resembles a post/tree puller.

man what a find
if you have a use for it then its going to save you big bucks not having to buy a tractor
that old iron in my opinion is the best
before I bought my tractor this is exactly what I was trying to find
I thought they were just too expensive around my parts to not buy new and they weren't in this good of shape

SN plate will be under seat on RH side. Trans/hyd oil dipstick is on the RH rear footrest. Check with engine idling. If oil is needed use JD Hy-Gard or it's equivalent. I'm curious why fenders are installed backwards.
My 2030 has the serial plate right side near the frt axle. Please put the fenders on correctly!

I was thinking 40 series were the 1st models with SN tag on RH side of frame above frt axle.
My 2030 has the tag on the right near the front axle

If this tractor needs to sit outside for a couple of months while I build a pole barn (using the tractor), what parts need to be covered. It looks like the shifter assemblies (boots are shot), exhaust pipe, and the steering/gauge cluster. Loosely covered with a breathable tarp. Maybe staked out for ventilation. Does sound right? Thanks
Exhaust and shifters

Put a coffee can over the exhaust, or put a flapper on it. The rest will be fine. My old 4020 never got to stay inside.
Bad boots on the shifters, I would not risk them letting water in

I see those mudguards is mounted the wrong way !
Me too, please put them on right!

I am out here with the tractor. Engine crankcase is full. Hydraulics is low. Manual still in mail. I have Hy-gard. Is the fill cap the big gas cap looking thing behind seat? Thanks. Tom
Hydraulic fill is a pain. I take the complete seat off (two bolts, 3/4" socket) makes filling MUCH easier.

Zebrafive
Thanks for correcting me on SN tag location. I sure didn't remember 30 series having it on frt frame but I should have remembered as trying to read SN when it was located under seat was a PITA.
