Westonium,
You are exactly right about them eating anything they can manage. There are lots of chicken houses down here, and they are a problem around all of them. My neighbor has 3 poultry houses and traps 8-12 per year. I kill 3-4 per year and we don't nearly put a dent in them. We commonly run them with dogs also while deer hunting. The only good one is a dead one. Fortunately I've never seen one that wouldn't run from man or a common yard dog. Poison works great on them, too.

A tale of getting close to a coyote:

Many a year ago[ the shotgun was taller than me] I was crawling [ sneaking ] up on a group of Canada Geese sunning themselves on the shore of an alkali lake. I had about 200 yards to crawl on my stomach. I always kept my head down. When I was close enough for the shooting to began as I stood up a coyote popped out of a small low bush a few feet in front of me. Flabbergasted me to the point there was no fresh hide or meat for the table that evening. Never fired a shot! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The shotgun, that I still have, was a Winchester Model 25 pump with a full choke 30 inch barrel and loaded with three rounds of Canuck BB's.

Not enough man with firearms around so it is logical they are losing their fear of man.

I always have coyotes stalking my chicken coop. I now have a guard donkey. You want to talk about a vicious killing, you should see what a donkey can do to a coyote or any stray dog that enters the property. He keeps all types of canines off the property. Although, we did have a coyote come into our backyard in the middle of the day! Yes, right near the childrens' swingset. My alert wife ran out the door with the shotgun in her hand. I was in the garage, and heard 3 shots ring out. The shots were so fast, I thought my wife had an automatic shotgun. I never heard a pump action fire so quickly. The children were inside, but her maternal instincts didn't lilke the fact a coyote was in the yard in the middle of the day. Of course, the Donkey was in the pasture, and the coyote was smart enough not to go in there! Anyway, after seeing that the coyote could stalk children, or so I think, I now see them as a serious threat, especially, if I see them during daylight.
