Dances With Coyotes

Was spraying a food plot the other night when I saw a deer lope across the field in front of me. No big deal, she was about 100 yards out. Then I looked again and it was a big coyote I had seen, not a deer. I have been hearing one go off howling like a maniac nightly behind my house before packing up to hunt. I stopped the tractor but did not turn it off. It came to within 20 yards and just lowered it's head looking at me. Turned off the engine, it then took a couple steps closer. I stepped down, and it took another step closer. Now I'm seeing the whites of it's eyes. I moved towards it and it stood it's ground, then trotted away. Just thought I'd share. I'll carry my Glock next time. I have little kids, two dogs, and coyote poop everywhere. I've seen lots of coyotes while hunting, never had one so brazen as this one.

Obviously a big dog! Being by himself and showing that much self confidence can only lead to trouble at your place. You'd be better off to establish who's the boss right away or better yet, dispatch him.

We have a coyote(s) problem as well. I have not heard or seen 'em in a while but last week at right before the alarm when off I heard one yelping. When I let the dog out a bit later she hit the scent trail and it was through our front yard. So roughly 30 feet from the house. I found two deer heads about 50-75 feet off another side of the house. My dad called one of them in one morning but my dog promptly chased it off.

I finally go off my duff and got a hunting license so I can legally shoot 'em. I guess I'm going to have to start getting up a bit earlier during the week and see if I can call them in.

They are showing no fear of us at all. We have a 3 and 6 year old plus our GSD. The dog I don't worry about since she stays with me but she still is at risk. Its the kids we worry about and the coyote(s) is showing no fear at all. I saw one a few months ago when I walked out the front door with our oldest. It stopped and watched us long enough for me to get my wife to come out on the porch and for me to point out the coyote in the woods. Wiley needs to go bye bye....

We have a ton of them behind my house. They are of the small variety around central new hampshire, but erie none the less. I was burning a brush pile at night a couple of years ago and out of no where one coyote lit up about 40 yards from me. That my friend is an spooky thing. Needless to say I scurried inside to grab the 9mm. If I go for a walk in the woods, it is always at my side, which is the main reason I got my liscense to carry. We have to bait them here because we do not have the large open spaces to take 200 yard shots. They definitely affect the deer herds, and do not let any tree hugging moron tell you otherwise. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I am of the belief that they have a much bigger impact on rabbits than deer, which I am more interested in.

I don't know anyone that hunts coyotes, but it sure seems like if a guy was into that he'd have no trouble finding places to hunt. I'd love to have a whole truckload of guys show up at my house asking permission to hunt coyotes.

So, if anyone out there wants a place to shoot coyotes in southern Indiana, you're more than welcome at my place!

There are some dirty underhanded coyote killing tricks. Like the big fish hook suspended about 5 feet off the ground with a chunk of meat on it. A few chunks on the ground to bait them in. I've never tried it but that trick is in my toolbox.

Many people really enjoy hunting coyotes. Another animal with a big following is crows.

Years ago I had a friend who spent many of his weekends hunting Coyotes. He said it was usually only one or two in the pack that were causing the farmers trouble, and he'd spend a week or two scoping the situation out, then take great pride in the describing the size of the hole he blew into the troublemaker!

They are smart critters but if you carry a easily wielding rifle on the tractor with you they will obviously let you get close for a dispatching shot.

Sorry about being so specific about the dirty tricks. I should mention the risk being that you might get your own dog strung up that way or a neighbor's dog. Not a pleasant way for any animal to die and is a little too indiscriminate.

Appropriate hunting methods and quick lethal gunshots are the first choice for problem yotes.

The only thing worse than a brazen coyote is one that lives long enough to teach it (and it will) to the others. Such a pack will change it's guerilla warfare tactics to shock & awe against whatever they feel like. Deer, dogs, kids - they will become prey.

In Temecula, CA there was a big pack going into people's yards over 6 foot fences, killing and eating BIG dogs. Rotts, Shephards, Great Danes - they'd overwhelm them with sheer numbers.

Think your 2 giant rottweilers are safe? Guess again. One on one? Sure. One on 3? Probably. One on 7, 10, 15? Bad news.

A neighbor recently took one out that was stalking his cat. He shot it with a 30-06. Everyone heard it and had a pretty good idea what happened.

Keep those coyotes scared! If you don't have a gun, stalk IT. Chase it. Throw rocks at it. Yell. I stood off with one for 20 minutes. It wouldn't back down even though I did all those things. If I came at it, it retreated. If I backed up, it advanced. Eventually my crappy aim got better and I started getting close with the dirt clods (couldn't find rocks). That sucker got shot a few days later - my only regret was that I didn't get the pleasure. It killed one of our dogs while my wife watched in horror.

Ask the city folk in Los Angeles about the mysterious dog snatchers there. They've got a ripe mess now.

My Great Pyrenees keeps scenting something lately and I bet that coyote has friends. Time to break out the rifle, the puppy in distress CD, and the boombox...
