We have fox squirrels here. They are bigger than a gray squirrel

More correctly in the southwest these are called rock squirrels (what the OP is having problems with). They are often found in rock dens but will burrow underground where the soil isn’t rocky. Their endless burrowing make them destructive. They don’t climb trees often, but they are good climbers. The bottom picture is also what we call a squirrel
I use the smaller version for mice with great success. But those rat traps seem a little small for ground squirrels.Find these 'ground squirrel traps' at TSC too.
Sprinkle black oil sunflower seeds outside and inside so they'll crawl in for the last few.
Set the smaller version nearby to catch mice that will clean out the larger traps without tripping them. Place the pair in any garage, barn, shed, or just on the floor of a long-parked vehicle. Checking traps every other day or so is usually enough.
I add cables to the large traps to reduce crawl-offs or vermin stealing a trap with my catch. Place them indoors or where birds don't frequent to minimize non-target catches. (one chickadee in 20+ yrs with this system but great success on rodents)
btw, IMO one best use of a trail cam is over vermin put out for hawks and buzzards. (stake 'em down there lol) Saves a lot of staring out the window and getting lucky timing avian visitors. lol

Those are one of my favorite squirrel species. I like the long ear tufts!More correctly in the southwest these are called rock squirrels (what the OP is having problems with). We also have tree squirrels (Abert squirrels ) that don’t burrow underground and aren’t destructive. They live in the trees and eat pine nuts. This is what our tree squirrels look like:

So! You have an inferiority complex so you like killing small animals. Is that sex related?I successfully control all mole/gopher/ gr squirrel and all this hole digging creatures population using very cheap and very effective method. Post#27
Even eradicated ground hogs from out of my neighbor's property. They were digging under his garage foundation. Took about 30 minutes.

Doesn't everybody have them? I see runs dug up here and there. Sometimes they wash out in a heavy train and act like drains that cause problems down hill. But I have some areas that see like they got lost and went around in a maze pattern tearing up several square yards of lawn. If you step...www.tractorbynet.com
