That's what I am thinking.

When I was juvenile delinquent we used to get granulated chlorine from my friends house(they had a pool), dump it in a pile and pour Pine-sol over it. The thing will start smoking in a few seconds, then burst into a fire so hot it makes an imprint on your retina. Of course we did this for our own entertainment...never to try and hurt anybody.

I been trying to get ride of a stump that I can't dig up due to where its located at. Burn it out! :) Also don't put granulated chlorine in a galvanized bucket, It will burn in no time! Happened at work!

In the old days it was carbide and water in a glass jar. I have a friend that still has a piece of glass in his eye ball.

We used to put the carbide in a round cigarette tin which had a nail hole in the bottom. Spit on the carbide and put the lid on. Wait for half a minute and the put a match to the hole. Then look for the lid. :D

When we put carbide in the science teachers very large glass aquarium full of all sorts of growing organisms; that didn't go down too well. And I had six red marks across my backside to prove it. :(

I just remembered, my grandfather was the one that told me about it. He would put carbide in a quart jar. He would put a pin hole in the lid. and then drop it in the lake. As it sank and water got in, it would build pressure until it blew. He would gather the fish that were stunned. We adapted it to more "usefull" projects.

What the **** is wrong with kids today. Sure we pulled pranks, but never with the idea of maming people. Something is awry in our culture. There was no such thing as "school shootings" when I was a kid.

Calcium Carbide. as in "limelight" or miners lamps "fuel" mix with water and it produces acetylene gas as in what Union Carbide made.

Leaving these around to be nasty to others simply doesn't cut it. Now on the other hand, doing this for my own amusement on my own land, I like it!!

So thats what it was. While driving home last wkend I saw somethig in the road that I ran over that exploded. When I looked in my mirror there was another small balloon just sitting on the road. I thought it was just a water balloon but the report was very loud. I will report this to the state police so they can be on alert. Thanks

It is the lack of disipline at home and in class wrecking generations of children thnaks to liberal standards established there.

Ahh, I see.

I was wondering because I deal with a lot of carbide tooling, and alot of times it is water-cooled when turning or milling something. I never noticed any toxic gas or anything being given off that would cause it to explode:confused2:

Thanks for the heads up Brin.

I remember when I was in High school we made similar concoctions in chemistry class,. We used the "mixes" to blast off a rocket we also had made. Different mixtures had different "explode times, and some really got the rocket moving too.

I do remember baking soda, vinegar and tin being common, in fact, there used to be a rocket kit with that almost that mix as the propellent sold. heres one that looks similar to ones I. remember.

Of course, kids in my day didn't do "drive by's " either.

THats been going around since the late 90's. my brother showed me how to make them in about 94. The first one I made I used too much works and not enough foil and it took 3 hours to go off. I had forgot about it and dad was asleep in his chair. I was out in the backyard shop and the thing went off in the ditch. I roun outside the shop and looked at the transformer, dad ran outside looking at me and the shop and in not so many clean words iwas ordere not to build another one.

We were building a development for a company we worked for. I was running one or our scrapers and we had 2 rented scrapers. We started out throwing water balloons at each other meeting on the haul road. Then one cat threw a dead snake at me. I made a works bomb out of a 2 liter bottle and chucked it in the scraper bowl on my buddies Terex as he left dinner break. He almost got out of the seat. We had a science teacher in HS that made them in a glass open bottle. He would put balloons over the opening and fill them with hydrogen gas.

Well on day he made one and didnt like the fumes so after he thought it was cooled he put a lid on it and put it in the trash. The next class almost pinched holes in their seats.
