I do not think that DRL's effect fuel milage any more than driving down the road with a bug splattered windshield and the very little wind resistance that would cause. And, you would be hard pressed to measure the fuel mileage difference between two identical vehicles, one with DRL's and the other sans DRL's... The reason the other companies did not go to DRL's is 'content' cost.... each penny or part of a penny they can deduct from every vehicle that comes down the production line... [ I want my vent windows back...!!!!! ] :)

DRL help spotting cars in low light areas ,when the car is coming at you..
MY problem with DRL where are the tail lights.. Dumbest think. WHY NOT have the tail lights burn at a differnent brightness. How many times have you been driving down the road in a pouring rain,fog, or white out. A car passes you with only there DRL ,(yes state law to have headlights on and there not) and pulls in front of you and you can not see the back of there car.
So my point is have DRL and tailight to come on at the same time... I feel this would make driving a lot saver being able to see the rear of a vehicle in a downpour or fog.. Yes it might only be a split second sooner seeing that lead vehicle but at least you had that split second .

Yeah, I think some manufacturers just did the minimum to comply with the letter of the law, not the spirit. My Volvo has all lights, headlights and taillights, on at full brightness whenever the engine is running. I don't even have to remember to turn my lights on at dusk. The only way I know I haven't turned the lights on is looking at the switch or using the dimmer switch, when the headlights flash instead of toggling high or low beam.
