Tryed to fire my tractor up after sitting two weeks and the brand new battery was dead, as in it read... 1 volt! So I charged it up, reinstalled and checked things out. Getting 30 volts AC at the Hitachi alternator, and 14.4 at the battery, all good. Sooo...something is discharging it while it sits with everything off. (No, the lights weren't left on) My quick fix is to disconnect the + lead when I leave, but my question is: how can I diagnose what is pulling from the battery? Or should I just install a kill switch in the + lead and forget about it?

I am not certain if anything on the tractor is setup to bypass the key switch. It would have to be either your key switch is not turning off or else a circuit that is not turned off with the key switch.

Could it be something bad in the charge circuit, letting it back feed?

You could alawys hook up an ammeter in line, and start pluuing one wire at a time untill you find out what is using hte power.

I would get the battery shutoff switch anyhow, (about $20). Been thinking of doing that myself since I leave it sitting for long periods. You can start with, switch off, testing between Batt.+ and frame ground with an ohmmeter and, if you have a short to ground, start disconnecting til it goes away. That should put you in the ballpark, and remember, charred plastic makes a great electrical conductor.

I would like to add to the previous. In the trouble shoot part it might be wise to lift the neg. cable on the battery before trouble shooting with an ohmeter from pos. to ground. Good luck.

Solved it with the KISS principle...bought a $5.00 quick disconnect terminal and installed it on the + lead. Fires up right away, disconnect it when I leave.
