BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- A German inventor has angered animal rights activists with his answer to fighting the soaring cost of fuel -- dead cats.

Christian Koch, 55, from the eastern county of Saxony, told Bild newspaper that his organic diesel fuel -- a homemade blend of garbage, run-over cats and other ingredients -- is a proven alternative to normal consumer diesel.

Koch said around 20 dead ******* added into the mix could help produce enough fuel to fill up a 50-liter (11 gallon) tank.

The ingredients are heated up to 300 Celsius to filter out hydrocarbons which are then turned into diesel by, and this is no joke, using a catalytic converter. Dr Koch told online new sources the resulting “high quality bio-diesel” costs just 15 pence per litre. The cadaver of a fully-grown cat can produce as much as 2.5 litres of fuel - meaning around 20 good ******* are needed for a full tank, he explained. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Koch said that there was no truth to the cat part of the story.

Triglycerides from any and all animal tissues can easily be used to strip the three fatty acids from the glycerol and esterify them the exact same as any plant derived fatty acids.

Skypup,

Hmmmmm........

So, can I plan on harvesting the deer that infest my land and toss them into the BioDiesel plant?

How many gallons per deer will I get?

Or to put it another way, how many miles per deer?

Rueters is reporting that the guy never said anythong about cats:
But Koch, 55, said there was no truth to stories published in Bild newspaper Tuesday and Wednesday that suggested he used dead cats as part of the mix for his organic diesel fuel.

"I use paper, plastics, textiles and rubbish," Koch told Reuters.

"It's an alternative fuel that is friendly for the environment. But it's complete nonsense to suggest dead cats. I've never used cats and would never think of that. At most the odd toad may have jumped in."

Bild Tuesday wrote a headline: "German inventor can turn cats into fuel -- for a tank he needs 20 cats."

Sounds interesting, with or without the cats /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is a company in the states that has been using the same process for a couple years called Changing World Technologies. I first read about them in a Discover magazine in 2003 where they were using chicken by products to make something similar to fuel oil #1. They were in the process setting up a plant with Butterball/Tyson/Holly Farms to process the tons of chicken and turkey entrails, but I haven't seen anything about it. It seems if this did indeed work, it would be big news.

Discover oil from Chickens

Changing World Tech

I'm somewhat skeptical but hope it's as good as it appears to be. Since then I've seen some debate.

Since you have the lipid chemical background, what's your opinion on this whole thing Skypup?

Turning biomass into synthetic diesel via catalytic gas conversion is the absolute BEST thing that could happen in this country.

Recycling all offal from slaughterhouses, arbittors, tree stumps, agricultural plant residue, forestry residue, municipal sewage, etc. and gasifying it into SynGas is the way to go.

Shell Oil recently opened and funded the first of these wonderful plants in Germany. The sooner we get into this over here the better!

Shell partners with CHOREN in the world’s first commercial SunFuel development
17/08/2005

Shell Deutschland Oil GmbH has acquired a minority equity stake in CHOREN Industries GmbH, Freiberg/Saxony. Shell’s commitment sets the stage for construction of the world’s first commercial facility to convert biomass into high-quality synthetic bio-fuel, already marketed by CHOREN as SunFuel. A 15,000 t/a plant is planned for the production of SunFuel. SunFuel is supported by carmakers such as Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler because it can be used without modification in any diesel engine without compromising performance and with a substantial reduction in harmful emissions.

CHOREN Industries has developed its patented Carbo-V® Biomass-gasification process to become a leader in the field of converting biomass – such as woodchips – into ultra clean tar-free synthetic gas. This “syngas” can then be converted into synthetic bio-fuels using the same Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS) technology that Shell has developed for Gas to Liquids production (conversion of natural gas into synthetic oil products). Shell is a leader in Gas to Liquids (GTL) technology with unparalleled operating experience in the first commercial GTL plant of its type at Bintulu Malaysia. The synthetic GTL Fuel produced is an important component of Shell’s market leading V-Power Diesel that is exclusively sold at Shell Retail stations in several markets including Germany.

The synthetic fuels made from biomass have identical composition to synthetic products derived from natural gas – yet they have the advantage of being sustainable and environmentally friendly because they are based on renewable feedstocks. BTL Fuel is as clear as water and virtually free of sulphur and aromatic substances. BTL Fuel’s ignition qualities (as measured by a very high cetane number >65) are excellent, thereby reducing noise and resulting in cleaner combustion than with conventional diesel. Greenhouse gas emissions from BTL Fuel are less than 10 per cent of those from fossil fuels. Moreover, BTL Fuel can either be used as a pure product or in a blend with conventional diesel fuel. Initially it will only be available in limited volumes until the technology progresses and larger plants can be built.

This is without a doubt lightyears ahead of anything else! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
