Dead Racoons?

Sorry about the repeats, guys. I have no idea how I did that and can't find the edit button to remove them. Maybe it'll turn up later. It might have been one of the cats more likely something I did though.

I know I would blame it on my kitty for sure.:)

Found one dead on a trail behind my place next to a stream. No obvious signs of injury, looks like it just lied down and died. Not very large, probably less than two years old. God knows there is no shortage of coons around here. Might have been distemper, have seen more than a few. Drooling clear liquid, walking as if intoxicated. Whats really odd is the black vultures found this guy within two days. We're talking heavy cover deep in the woods next to a stream. No way for a visual id, they must have have smelled it. Very impressive.

I'd be more likely to suspect rabies with the ones with the symptoms you described than with two found dead together.

Exactly what I was thinking. It is always best to burn questionable carcass's to prevent the spread of rabies. Burn and be sure.

Do you have stray dogs in the area? Was the fur damp/matted? We used to find them in pairs, put out a game camera. Found out our 2 dogs were killing them. No visual signs of trauma on the coons, just dead.

Most vultures locate by extremely sensitive ability to smell. Black vultures locate by vision or following other scavengers. A you sure they we black vultures?

Perhaps a turkey vulture, didn't get a good look at it, cover to thick. Impressive ability to smell out that carcass, I thought about that when I first saw it. Within two days the vulture(s) arrived.
