Dealer disagrees with owners manual

I have a 4310 Hydro with almost 50 hours on the meter. My manual states that at 50 hours, the oil and the hydro suction side filter be changed (along with other items). I went to my local dealer to purchase $150 worth of various oils filters, grease etc. and was told they they have never heard of changing the suction side filter at 50 hours. The parts person didn't even know what it was, at first, and they only had 1 in stock (at over $30). I was also told if I was to change the engine oil, to use break-in oil again for an additional 50 hours. I ended up buying the suction side filter and both types of oils. I would be happy to get any input from the forum as to what information I should go by. Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

When in doubt go by the manual. It will never hurt you to change filters too often!

My philosophy is: If "tractors" was a religion, then its "bible" would be the owner's manual.

Unless Deere has come out with a written, official service notice that overrides the procedure, I'd do it so as not the anger the tractor "gods." /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

PS I remember reading something about a screen that needs to be CLEANED, not REPLACED. Could this be what I vaguely remember....?

I just had the 50 hour servicing done on my 4710. The dealer did everything that the operator's manual instructed. About the engine oil....yes, he did use the break in oil again and told be at the next point of servicing I could use the regular oil.

I would change the filters just like the manual says and clean the suction side screen. When I changed oil, I used 15-40 Plus 50 oil. No one told me I needed to use break-in oil again. I guess time will tell.

They service manager did tell me to use Low Viscosity hydraulic oil, even though (for my climate) the manual says to use Hi-Gard. He said he'd went to one of John Deere's schools and that they recommended Low Viscosity in all the hydros, in all climates? I guess time will tell on that too.

Manuals probably err on the safety side but I'd be tempted to follow the manual just for warranty purposes. There really can't be too many filter changes.
I'd suspect the Dealer recomends the second round of breakin oil as you may not have worked your tractor all that hard.

Uh- 2000 hours ago my new kubota B7100 arrived and received it's first oil/filter change at 10 hours using regular 10-30 diesel motor oil. Hydro and filter was changed some 200 hours later.

What is "break in" oil? In the past we once used non detergent oil as the oil to "break in" a new or rebuilt engine. Today, from cars, trucks and even some tractors I am told that because of machining and metalurgy, that practice is no longer followed. Redline, a synthetic oil manufactuer, does recommend not using their product until 3000 miles have been put on. That would be about 50 hours at 60 mph. Rat...

On my L48 there was a suction screen they recommend cleaning at the 50 hour point. After pulling it I realized, hey, if this thing needs cleaning, I've got a real problem. FWIW I got the opposite advice use from my dealer on Hi-Gard. It would be good to see a recomendation from JD.

I would definately go by the book unless the dealer does have an serice bulletin from John Deere.

I am on the same thinking here as RaT as far as break-in oil. I was on the impression that was a thing of the past. I also was told by a couple of different manufactures not to change the oil pre-maturely. If it says 50 hours wait until you are close to the 50 hours to allow the valve and rings to seat properly. But again go by the manual.
