Dealer disagrees with owners manual

I should think following the manual is at the very least, cheap insurance, at worst, overkill. Judging from the way many folks here treat their tractors, overkill is the theme. I too just follow the manual. In the end, the maintainence is peanuts compared to the investment. Rat...

The JD break-in oil is 10w30 oil. No API rating is listed on the bottle. I changed my engine oil at 50 hrs along with my THF and front end gear oil.

At 50 hours on my 4600, I did the maintenance recommended in the manual. While perusing the on-line version of the manual, I noticed that there were several differences between it and the printed version. The on-line version had a different hydraulic filter and it also recommended cleaning the suction filter too.

In mentioning this to the dealer during my later visit, they commented that JD doesn't always send the updates to them and the web has become a quicker resource for updates. I shared with them what I had found and they said that in their latest CD update the change was made. But it wasn't in any of the printed manuals that they had on_hand.

Oh well. I would recommend verifying with the on-line version (the 4600 is no longer out there, but I printed out everything I could get my hands on) if you can access it - and then go with what is in the manual. The dealer can always go to their latest CDs and/or call too (at least that's what they told me they'd do if we believed there was a discrepancy).

As for the break-in oil, I didn't put that in when I changed mine out. And I also went with the Hy-Guard and have had no problems with it. I'd say that even with the discrepancies in the manuals (on-line/printed) and with the dealers, we're all probably pretty safe if we err on the high side with our service work. Most everyone on this forum treats their machines like their first-born kids anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good luck and take care!

let me get this straight. You guys are using hygaurd as engine oil?? I thought hygaurd was strictly for thr hydrauilics???

At first I read one post referring to using the hygaurd in the engine, I figured it was a misunderstanding, but then I saw some more posts mentioning it. Now Im totally confused which is not unusual, but can somebody set me straight?,,,,gott

Two different oils being spoken about here... engine oil and hydralic oil... IMPORTANT...neither of which is interchangable!

Just for the record at the 50 hour our dealer (RANCAR and mine... KC Canary in Fultonville NY) did recommend the breakin engine oil be used for the next 50 hours or a total of 100 hours. They said their experience is better mating of rings and other engine parts resulting in stronger engines that last longer. Of course we all know the secret to long engine life is regular maintenance (especially the engine oil)!
Bottom line: I trust my dealer... they have been doing this a long time and have an excellent reputation! If you do not have a dealer with this kind of experience or you just don't know that much about them... go with the Owners Manual or the latest update on the Website! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Amen!!!! Hi Jim.....how goes it? It's been awhile since we've chatted. Finally, this week, things may be drying out a bit to do some serious tractor work. How's your camp coming along? Any tractor projects in the works? For me, it's cleaning up in the woodlot after my logger finishes some selective cutting he started today.

Your dealer needs to get with the program. Do the 50 hour service EXACTLY by the book. I just completed my 50 hour break-in service on my 4410. I did it myself so I would be certain it was done right. It is not that difficult to do. I also let my sit for over 24 hours to make sure I drained as much oil out of the engine and transmission as possible. Change ALL the filters and clean the suction screen, I found small pieces of metallic and non-metallic debry in mine. I also found the same in the 3 pt. hitch filter. I use the standard Hy-Guard as the manual requires it about 27 degrees C or 80.6 degrees F. There is also a warning about this in the transmission service section temperature/oil use table. The manual also calls for 15W-40 or SAE 30 above 30 degrees C or 86 degrees F. Do it by the book and you will not be wrong. Hope you have some strong arms and a monster grip.......... Hercules and the Hulk tag teamed tightening my hyd. suction filter. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I did my 50 last fall, and my dealer looked at me funny too when I asked for the suction screen, but got it for me. I would probably agree that it does not need to be 'changed' but jsut cleaned as mine had very little metal/debri, almost less than could fit on a finger tip, and it was easily cleaned off with carb cleaner, etc.. but since i had a new one, i put it in.
Also about the hydro oil, i got 2 different stories from, the same dealer, salesman seai hi guard, parts guy said low vis, so i met them in the middle, filled her with hi guard per the manual for NJ area, and topped it off later (1 gal) with low vis??
