I've done a lot of research on the internet and a little shopping around for a used Yanmar. I am considering checking out a Yanmar at Lowe's Tractor and Equiptment in Greensburg, IN. Just wanted to know if anyone here has any knowledge or experience with this outfit before I make a 2 hr trip w/ trailer. I'll go prepared to buy so I'd like to know beforehand if they have quality stuff and if they are honest.

In generally, any input you have on what I should be looking for/checking out on any Yanmar before I purchase would be appreciated.

Have you talked to them on the phone? Your first impression is usually correct. If you feel stressed or uncomfortable with the deal then walk away. Go with your instincts they are usually dead on.

Mtimber.

The question is good and there is much to suggest so I'll start it and let others carry on. I'm not from your area and although I know of Lowes can't offer much help on the dealer.

As for what to look for in a Yanmar, first talk to the dealer and tell him what tasks you want to accomplish and ask his recommendation on size. Most people we talk with over estimate there needs.

Next determine 2wd vs. 4wd. More than half who have 4wd don't NEED it and don't know it. You get more for your money on 2wd and less potential problems. On the other hand the added expense is not so prohibitive that over a few years it is minimal if you just WANT 4wd. Besides in many areas if you want to sell you may lose 2/3 of potential buyers who won't even look at 2wd.

The overall appearance is of importance but not always an indicator of condition. Nice original appearance doesn't mean it was mechanically taken care of and less than nice doesn't mean it was mechanically abused. Repaints are not an indication of an attempt to hide problems and original fluids still there for your inspection doesn't mean honesty necessarily.

Look at the hours on the tractor. 4 spool meters are better 3 than spool because on a 3 spool 500 can mean just that or 1500 or 2500, etc. 4 spools give more accuracy absent outright fraud.

I think I have taken enough space for this time and I find I am repeating from my site and only just starting.

We have a lot more on our web site at

Please also consider us....we are not far from Greensburg, and will gladly give you customer references if you will email us. "We" are Little Miami Trading Company. I will not post our website, as I don't know if the forum rules allow for that, but you can do a Google search and find us, or go to my profile and email me.
And double dittos on the above posts. A competent dealer should be able to match your needs and a tractor. If you want to buy more than that, it's certainly your choice. Our experience is that most customers over-estimate their HP needs, and dramatically over-estimate the need for 4wd. And if you're not comfortable that the dealer is being honest, how comfortable is it going to be to resolve a problem if you have one later on? I don't consider a dealer's measure to be so much whether or not there are problems, but rather HOW the problems are RESOLVED.

Well, since I'm not advertising my own company, I'm sure there is no rules infraction here. Here is a very competent dealer close to Greensburg

Mark, as far as 2WD vs 4WD, if you want a front end loader, now or in the future, I would definitely get 4WD, otherwise you won't need it. Get a tractor that fits your stature. I think it was Doug that at 6'3" and 250# is a little sorry he got a 1500. I guess everything is just a little too close together. I prefer original paint and original fluids, not necessarily that they can hide something with new, but you know they have to charge for these things which you should be able to do yourself if you are going to own a 20+ year old tractor. If the original paint is too bad, I wouldn't buy it. Whatever you decide on, get them to let you drive it for a while, check all functions, all speeds, forward, reverse, pto speeds, 3pt lift, tires for wear, cuts, and gouges, and by all means check for oil leaks, especially if 4WD. Most dealers probably don't give much, if any, warranty on a 20 year old machine that's likely to be abused anyway.

A tip. If you will include your Email address in you Bio you will get more replys. I for one will never give an opinion of anything on the club. It has caused way too many hurt feelings. If facts are requested and I feel qualified I will jump right in.
I am a retail dealer and have delt with both LMT and Lowe's.

I have delt with Lowes only as far as parts go . I was very satisfied with their knowledge, parts and quick shipping . I know they do have a pretty good selection of Grey tractors but can not comment on the quality or service after the sale . I always will call them when i am looking for parts and will usually go with the best price and my gut feeling as to if they really know what part I am looking for . Call them first and get a feeling for them . There are a lot of dealers who participate here who would love to sell you or me a tractor. Service and satisfaction after the sale are very important factors.

If I were you I would try LMTC. I have dealt with them a few times and have always been happy with the service. They DO support what they sell. Wayne is honest and upfront. He won't try to sell you something you don't need. The best thing to do when dealing with any dealer is do your own research then go there and act like you are clueless, if they are honest you'll know pretty quickly just how honest they really are.
