Thanks for all the feedback, folks - I've narrowed it down to two dealers.

First, I've eliminated the CA dealers from consideration - all four I contacted were way higher in price. I even contacted a couple in more rural areas, where the cost of doing business should be less. And the odd thing - all of them were competetive on implement prices, just not tractors.

Even if my primary use of the tractor were in CA, I can't say I'd buy locally - we're talking about a $2-3K difference between the CA dealers and Oregon/Washington. Yup, you read that right...one is even selling his vineyard lease returns for $1K more than I can buy new in OR and WA. For about $200 in gas and trailer rental fees, I could go fetch one from up north.

Anyway, here are the two dealers I'm considering:

- Mid-Valley Tractor in Eugene OR. I've been dealing with John at Mid Valley (one of the two owners), and he's been incredibly helpful over the phone. He's had a bunch of recommendations, all of which have been backed up by feedback I've read here. He FAX'ed me a no-nonsense price sheet, that contained all Kubota tractors and configurations, as well as implements he sells. Made it a piece of cake to price things out on my own as I work through the myriad of options. Pricing is excellent, from what I've read here - Kubota stuff is basically 15% off list.

- Sunset Wire Rope in Port Angeles WA. Nobody recommended these guys, but I'm considering them since they are very close to my WA property. They are not a huge dealership, selling tractors is not their only business. However, they were responsive and helpful on the phone, and a good friend of mine who lives in PA has been very happy with them with non-tractor business he's had with them over the years. Pricing was higher than Mid Valley by about $800, and they don't sell any of the brands of implements I'm leaning towards. However, I'm not opposed to buying the implements elsewhere.

I called two other dealers recommended here - Moen and the Issaquah dealer. Both were very helpful, but slightly higher in price than Mid-Valley. Not by enough to rule them out if I lived local to them.

Hoping to make the move before the end of the year - I'll post back when it's a done deal.

Pulled the trigger...

Ended up going with Sunset Wire and Rope in Port Angeles. Mitch was great to work with, and came within $300 of the best price I was quoted - basically, 15% off of list. Hard to get a feel for implement pricing, as everyone sells different stuff, but I believe he was competetive there as well. And I got in under the wire...2004 pricing and the Kubota 0% 2 year financing deal.

Even though the pricing was good, not surprisingly, the defining factor was as so many of you pointed out - local dealer service. The kicker - Mitch will haul my tractor and implements between my currently bare land and my temporary storage location for $60 any time I need it; this is about a 40 mile round trip for him each time, so that's pretty darn fair. It saves me from buying a trailer right away, and gives me a more flexible building schedule for putting up the pole barn, the 3130's permanent home.

Ended up with the following - should be delivered in about 2 weeks:

<ul type="square">[*]3130HST w/filled R4's
[*]Folding ROPS
[*]LA723 loader, HD QA 72" bucket w/edge, 2 welded on grab hooks
[*]TNT (aftermarket)
[*]EZ Landscaper toothbar
[*]Rankin 72" box scraper
[*]Rankin 84" landscape rake w/gauge wheels
[*]Rankin PHD-600 w/12" auger
[*]Rankin 72" Rotary cutter w/slip clutch/chains
[/list]

Still deciding on a tiller - they sell a 57" Celli that looks pretty stout for about $2K, but I won't need that right away...probably put off that purchase until summer.

Thanks again to all you helpful TBN'ers - you all made my first-time tractor purchase a breeze.

Seems like you did your homework and you have a nice set up in the works.

Just two comments come to mind. I have a H&H toothbar and think they are tops as far as strength goes. The EZ landscaper is the same toothbar, just more teeth. Good choice I would expect.

I would consider a bucket hook in the center. I love having one there and would not want to be without it. In my case I chose to weld on a slip hook in the middle. Works real well. You can pass a chain through it, and hook it into the grab hook on either side. Real handy sometimes...consider it before the tractor is delivered, as it will not cost much extra, since they are going to be welding hooks on anyway.

Sounds like a real nice setup you have coming. Enjoy!

I'm hoping so...this is the only item I'm not 100% sure of. I have a fair amount of heavy brush removal to do, but it should be a one-time thing. After it's gone, I'll keep it cut and/or sprayed. While the Landscaper is more expensive than a regular toothbar, it's less than a regular toothbar + clamp-on forks.

Good idea, thanks.

Just saw this, don't really feel like going through and reading all posts, but I live up in Norther WA State, the rental company I work for uses only kubota excavators and backhoes. We buy them from Scholtens. We' have no problems that I'm aware of with them, GREAT company. Not sure if they have any stores down in Snohomish Co. and south, but up here in Skagit and Whatcom Co. they have stroes.
