Went to the dealer this weekend to pick up the fluids and filters needed to do the 50 hour service on my 3830. They said not to worry about changing the transmission/hydraulic fluid just change the filter and top it back off. He even gave me UDT versus SUDT to top it off. Does this make sense?

No. Assuming the manual says you change the fluids at 50 hours, which mine does, thats what you should do. Besides, not doing so might void your warranty. When I did my 50 hours service there was quite a bit of metal in the screens./

Alan is steering you right. The first fluid change is when you check for metal on the screen. I'd want an idea of how much metal, if any, has shown up. In subsequent changes you should see less metal after the break in. If you don't do the 50 hr. change, you won't have a baseline for later.

FWIW, I never found metal in the screen on the 50 hr. change.

When not using SUDT, some TBN members have reported decreased FEL operation. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I put in SUDT at the 50 hr service and I believe that the HST whine is less. Can't speak to FEL operation except that it seems smoother. The only negative is that I have a little more leak down whereas I had almost none before with regular UDT.

I would do the 50 hr service regardless of what the dealer tells you. I don't know why he would suggest that? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I use the UDT and it works fine. I think the super UDT is geared more towards colder climates. Most dealers in south Texas don't even stock it.

change the fluid, or better yet find a dealer and let them do it. Mine has never been changed by anyone but him, so if something does go south, it is all him.

I would look for another dealer for service, he is steering you wrong, and if he would put in less than what is required, well that dont set well

The SUDT vs UDT issue is up to you, some have seen a difference in performance. I don't know the difference I have only used SUDT.

Your dealers approach to The 50 hour service is strange. I'm sure The fluid is ok if filtered and put back in but who is going to do that. The point is checking the screen in the pump suction line, and you need to drain the fluid to do this. Kubota really seems to want the fluid out at 50 hours.

My dealer is very thorough on the 50 hour service. When I wanted to do it my self they had a mechanic spend almost an hour with me so I would do everything that they do. They check a lot of stuff above what is listed in the manual.

Maybe their shop is to busy to deal with 50 hour services.

I did my own 50 hr service and never checked the screen. I did change the filter and used SUDT. Seems to work the same. I use my BX23 VERY hard. Just wondering if I needed to check the screen. Unless I may have read the book wrong but I thought it needed to be cleaned after 300 hours?
Heres a picture with 76 hours and 5 months old taken this past weekend.

Definitely check & clean the screen. Chemically, all the fluids would normally have atleast 50 more hrs of servicable life left in them but the reason for the two 50 hr fluid changes (at 50 and then at 100 hrs) is to remove all the shavings, bits and pieces of metal that becomes suspended in those fluids due to engine & HST break-in. The screen keeps the debris from entering the HST/pump and if it's doing it's job it should need cleaning.
