As an added note, if you lengthen your oil change interval from 50 hrs to 100 hrs (or 3000 to 6000 miles, or whatever) by using a synthetic, it will be twice as long before you find out about an engine related problem because your not changing your oil as often. Works both ways.
You can take an oil sample any time. No need to wait for a complete drain and refill.

That's correct, but I don't know why you would other than at oil change. I guess if you started losing coolant or oil started smelling like diesel or you had reason to suspect something had gone wrong (engine developed noise that hadn't previously been there). So if you had an extended oil change interval in place, you think you should still sample oil at recommended regular hrs or miles? Please explain.

Back to the original poster. One thing you may consider doing, is asking for the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for the particular oil that you are looking at. Many times JD (as well as many other companies) do not even bother writing their own MSDS for their private labeled products and will just use the manufacturers MSDS.

I would not be the least bit suprised to see something like Chevron across the top of the MSDS.

My dealer also recommended JD oil. He does lots of work and knows the machines well. While I'm still under war. I'll use JD stuff. I figure I can't go wrong and JD isn't going to give me 'bad' stuff just to make a buck. Heck they already made enough bucks on me!

As far as oil in my car goes I know that Merc., Corvette and Porsche all come from the factory with Mobil 1, 10w-40 in them. My friend has a Merc. 320 SUV if I remember and when he got it years ago Merc. just said use regular oil. Now they switched him to the synthetic.

I've always used synthetic in the cold northern climate I live in and just for the cold starting it's worth it for me to use synthetic.

I'm using Mobil 1 in my Subie and my Toyota. I noticed one thing but I'm not sure if it is the oil doing it or not (I have an inquiry into Subaru) but when I start my car after it's been sitting all night in the cold I can hear the lifters on both cars. I'm wondering if the oil is draining out of the hydrolics on the boxer engine but I'm not sure how they lay it out so I don't know the position of the lifters to tell if gravity is a factor. Once it warms up it is quiet. Subaru doesn't use sythetic and advise that if you change to it then live with it forever. The Toyota does it for about a minute or two after start up then it's ok but the Subie can go a good 3 or 4 minutes.

I like synthetic and I do get a couple of miles per gallon more to the gallon with it plus some punch.

"Works both way's" Not in my book. That's the whole point of doing a UOA. Do the UOA's at the normal scheduled change intervals and only change it when the UOA reports that it should be changed. Your engine, trans or rear will last longer because if there is a problem it will be caught with the UOA and the problem can be corrected before it becomes a major problem. I highly advise against running extended drain intervals without UOA's at scheduled times as this is trouble waiting to happen.

If your just changing your oil at normal book times and not doing a UOA what do you expect to find? Do you have microscopic eye sight? By the time there was enough metal in the oil that it was visable to the naked eye it would be to late anyway.

While buying about $100 worth of filters for my 4310 yesterday, the dealer asked me if I had John Deere brand motor oil to use. He said that they had seen non-JD brand oil gum up the fuel shutoff - "even the synthetic oil".

He seemed sincere, but good salesmen always do. If what he said is true, then I'm sure one of you guys will know about it and fill me in.

Tom

Definitely Hype

Here is my take. JD fluids are excellant. They aren't overpriced. So, if you use them, there is little chance the dealer taking any issue with it when there are warranty concerns.

But using good oil like Rotella isn't bad.
I agree.

What is a UOA?

UOA = used oil analysis. A test done by a labratory on used lubricating fluids to tell you the condition of the fluid, any contamination like coolant and wear metals, TBN (total base number, the ability of the oil to neutralize acid's) and so on. A invaluable tool in extending engine life and extending drain intervals.

You can find some very informative info at Wear Check's website under the technical documents link. WearCheck - Condition Monitoring through Oil Analysis
