Buying Advice Dealers advertising no out of state tax...

Like I said I'm not telling anybody what to do, or how I would do it. But I also dont worry about ripping tags of pillows and blankets either.

No worries, Nards444. I got your point the first time. I just wanted to be sure you hadn't missed mine way back on page 3. Other readers might get the impression it's as simple as what paperwork the buyer keeps. The revenuers aren't going to go through an individual taxpayer's file drawer looking for retail receipts. They'll have access to other evidence. :)

Yep, I cut off pillow tags also. But it's not actually illegal to do that.

The tags are ONLY TO BE REMOVED BY THE CONSUMER - which means you have to eat those tags or it's against the law :confused2:

 I'd never thought of it that way!

As a good citizen the onus is on you to volunteer to remit the taxes to your local jurisdiction.
Naturally we understand as a loyal upstanding TBN member you will do so.

And you still believe in Santa, right!

Piloon, ouch! :)

The consumer taxes on goods in Quebec total almost 15%, don't they? No wonder your tax collectors don't rely on self-reporting by the consumer (even TBN members). For goods bought out-of-province, I think the out-of-province seller has to collect the home-province tax. Is that right?

Anymore, it doesn't take an audit to end up cross-wise with the revenuers on state use tax. When it comes to big-ticket items, and items delivered by interstate truck freight or by a dealer in a neighboring state, whether or not you keep the sales receipt won't matter. Excerpting from post #27:

"As for whether getting tagged is likely, as state budgets get tighter and out-of-state purchases become more common, tax authorities are getting much more aggressive. Big-ticket items like heavy equipment and machinery are high-profile targets. Keep in mind that shipping manifests, purchase orders and sales invoices don't enjoy any privilege of privacy. Dealers operating near state lines, and most interstate trucking companies (think shipments of equipment like tractor implements), frequently are requested to cooperate with state tax authorities by providing copies (or digital data) disclosing sales and deliveries to residents in the inquiring state. I know of a number of instances where folks have gotten large use tax bills two or three years after the fact for purchases they thought were "tax free"! So much for the trade off for the inconvenience, and perhaps risk, of buying a tractor from a remote dealer in another state."

Just another case for:
Use your own 3/4 ton truck, and buy your own trailer!

Ha! Any excuse for a new tool!

Except that, putting aside the self-reporting obligation, it doesn't work if the dealer is in a state/county having a "point of delivery" rule, as most do. As soon as the dealer loads onto your trailer, his legal duty to collect sales tax there is triggered, as possession has transferred. Even if he's willing to risk his license, the most it would do would enable non-reporting of a portion of the home-jurisdiction use tax if that rate is higher than the collected rate.

Regardless of tax implications, I'm all for having a 3/4 ton truck and a transport trailer just on principle!

Pard, are you not eligible for the Louisiana exemption for farm tractors?

Thx for the link! I’m pretty sure I’m not able to because I’m not farming. Ranching would be the correct term and my vegetable garden probably won’t cut it. lol I’m still going to look into it.
