I just took in my YM1401 after a total of three hours use. It had numerous difficulties and I watched as the mechanic took out the hydraulic filter and it was full of debris and was stopping the lift from working and maybe also the PTO. The clutch was also burned up after only three hours of use. I am worried more about the debris and feel that the debris must be coming from parts wear or something from the outside getting into the block. The tractor meter only has 380 hours showing. The dealer says this is frequent problem that is caused by the tractors setting up for a long time. Any one out there have any good advice? I am worried that this maybe indicative of future problems. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

"Any one out there have any good advice?" Never buy a gray market tractor unless you are a good mechanic and are willing to check out everything yourself. Depending on the overall look of the tractor, the hour meter could easily have rolled over.

Sometimes water in the hydraulic system will look like whitesh debris on the filter and the fluid will be a milky white. This problem can cause the pump to malfuction. Drain and clean hydraulic reservoir, clean filter and add John Deere 303 fluid. I bet this will take care of your problem. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Red,

Did you get caught in any of the tornados last week?

We were on the edge of the tornado and sustained only moderate damage to our property. We lost shingles etc. from our home and some fruit trees from our orchard. Downtown Jackson was nearly destroyed. The deaths were to the west of us. I don't want to go through another one. I used my 1401 to remove the damaged fruit trees and for its size did a good job.

Sounds like the suction screen was never cleaned when it came from Japan. It is very normal for the screen to be covered in the nastiest stuff you can imagine. They are not that way because they sit in Japan they are that way because they are “used” in Japan and that is most likely the original fluid. Once you clean it, flush it and replace, it will be fine. The PTO stopped because the clutch went out. Did the clutch "burn up" or did it just go bad? It didn’t burn up after only 3 hours of use. It burned up after 20 years and 3 hours of use. Not abnormal for a 20+ year old tractor to have a bad clutch. It is a cheap easy fix and you will have a clutch that will last for a long time if used properly. You are not having any problems that I wouldn’t expect to see on a 20+ year old JD
