Thanks to all of your enthusiastic comments about the BX23 and checking them out at the dealer, I decided to soon purchase one myself. The dealer in San Diego quoted me a price of $16,000 for the BX23, $565 for the post hole auger and $120 for a "6 auger bit, and $570 for a gearmore box scraper. How does this sound to everyone? Could I save by heading up to a dealer in Oregon? I heard I may be able to get a BX23 for 14.900 up there and not have to pay sales tax.....that would be about a $2400 savings. Can anyone recomend a dealer in Oregon?

Are you paying cash? If your taking out a loan, the California Boad of Equalization (state tax collector) will eventually be giving you a call. I thought I was clear and free until about 16 months later they gave me a call. They may even be able to track you if paying cash, they are getting that good. Your local dealer will be far more receptive to doing repairs on your BX when purchased through him. Also, figure in fuel expense to haul the BX that far, trailer rental if doing it yourself as well as insurance. If a trucking company is doing it, figure that cost. Just a few thoughts.

I did not know I was obligated to pay the CA tax on a purchase in Oregon. If that is the case I will get the tractor here in CA. You are right about the added expense of bringing it down here. Gas and miles on my truck...and the time involved are are not worth the 1,000 dollar differace if I still end up paying the taxes. Thanks

From what I've read on TBN, prices are wildly different all over the country. You $16k is a little higher than average in Florida, but well, so is the cost of everything else in CA. If you are happy with the price then go for it. When I looked around at bringing a machine in from out of state, I came to the conclusion that I could get the same price here, and the tax was nearly a wash when compared to shipping.

The post hole auger you mentioned, is that a Kubota branded unit? I've been reading up on PHD's here on TBN and plan on buying one in a couple months. I plan on buying a box blade sooner. Right now though, my BX23 is again packed into the garage with all my other stuff, in anticipation of yet another hurricane hitting Florida.

Jared, That is quite a hurricane that is hitting you there in Florida! Please let us know you are ok after it has passed. As for the Post hole digger, the name brand is "Gearmore". The box scraper is Gearmore also. I did not get a good look at the PHD, but the box scraper is very well made and one of the best I have seen. The $16,000 for the tractor is probably a fair price for this area and I will go with it. Thank you for your feed back.

I had bought a tractor from Carvers out of North Carolina and had it shipped to California. I saved quite a bit even with shipping until the tax bill came, then the differences disappeared quickly. While it was still slightly cheaper, the added anxiety of the possibility of having a warranty job done on it was a concern. You might try calling a few dealers in the valley as well. I was prepared to buy several hundred miles away. I have a Gearmore boxblade and your right, they can be very good and better then most. While Gannon tends to be a little better in build strength in the competing models, they are reflected in the cost. Best of wishes.

In Medford, just across the border, there are 2 dealers. Naumes is the one that sold Ultrarunner his BX23 for $14,900. No sales tax in OR is correct (but they don't let you pump your own gas up there-go figure).

As far as Board of Equalization goes, cars you already own in another state, when brought to CA, are charged vehicle registration AND 7.5% of their value extra, just as if you'd just bought it here & had to pay sales tax a second time. Now they can track that 'cause you have to register the thing. Insurance agents have told me that bigger tractors here have to be registered, but that BXs are too lightweight. They're considered personal property, so no registration. Technically, for anything a Californian buys mail or internet order from another state, you're SUPPOSED TO fill out a form on it & pay whatever the sales tax would have been if you bought it here, and attach it to your state income tax return. Guess how many people actually do that? I've never heard of anyone taken to task for not doing it.

At the CA-Oregon border on I-5, there's an inspection station, but they can only ask whether you're bringin' in fresh fruits & veggies. They can confiscate that 'cause exotic ag pests cost us billions to eradicate. I don't think they can leagally ask about other stuff. That road goes over a BIG mountain, so you'd need an extra heavy duty truck AND trailer with VERY GOOD BRAKES. To avoid an inspection station, go from OR to NV, south to Reno, west to Truckee, CA. Then, instead of I-80 over Donner Summit, when you get to the town of Truckee, take the road to Donner Lake, drive along the lake & keep going. This is the old highway over Donner Pass. (Yes, for you curious ones, all named for the Donner Party cannibals.) There's no inspection station on this road, & you can get into CA without being inspected. Still, you better have really good truck, trailer, & brakes. You might think about renting a U-haul truck & puttin' the whole rig inside it, really secured well.

Good Luck whatever you decide. Let us know what you wind up doing.

Tom, for me it had nothing to do with the inspection stations, it was that Kubota must report all loans with the various tax entities. I'm told that is how I was "nailed". I was able to deduct shipping but not handling costs. The shipping cost was very, very, very high /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

PS, that inspection station in Truckee is basically closed. They have not made vehicle inspections there for over a year now. I drive it every week working in Reno.

Tom..... with directions like that, my only question is... "were you a smuggler in a previous life?"..... LOL...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Brian, thanks for the concern, everything came out OK at my place. Lost some shingles and branches and about 150 ft of fence, but that was all. Thanks for the info on the Gearmore units. I'm a few months away from buying a PHD, but I'll need one soon to replace the fences.
