I would like to start by saying Merry Christmas to all of you. I am going to build a roof over our hot tub on our deck, but I am wanting to put some sort of sky lights in the roof. I don't want to use sky lights like you would use in a pole barn and I am not sure if I want ones like I have in my house. Any advice or ideas on what to use would greatly be appreciated.

and a Merry Christmas to you too! There's bubble type like these and clear corrugated panels with a profile to match metal roofing. There's also non-opening sky lights of the same style that you'll find in houses - these are the most expensive (not as expensive as venting lights) but look the best IMO. If you have a decent lumber yard (not a Home Depot or Lowes) they may have other options available.

Another option is tempered glass. It is available from surplus dealers in the sliding glass door sizes. A 6068 door would have panels 33" by 76" I think. You would not be able to walk on that section very easily.

Check with the codes. Overhead glass must meet some standards.

When tempered glass breaks, it shatters into small pieces. That's the safety feature. This is a typical use for green houses and passive solar features. Another disadvantage of this idea over a hot tub, might be too much sun, causing fading of colors.

Have you looked into the tube lights? I've seen them in some homes and was impressed with how much light they let in. Not sure how hard they are to install, but most are put in to existing homes, so new construction should be easier.

A custom glass shop can cut them any size you want, not just as replacements. I just did a storm window for an antique 'eyebrow' window (about 45 in x 22 in) and it was just under $100. Not bad if you compare it to the cost of a store-bought skylight (keep in mind that's without any framing or trim material).
