decompression lever

Having just traded in my Yanmar for a 4110, I get tomorrow. I was wondering, the old Yanmar had a decompression lever, to make it easier to start when it was cold. And it helped get the motor spinning so the oil pressure could come up, before the engine started. As the new Deere's don't use it, even if they are made by Yanmar, I wonder how it works without one. Maybe more powerful starter motor, or what. Does anyone know the answer?

Don't know the secret either, but my Yanmar diesel still starts in below zero weather after 6 years, and on the first rev too.

I added the block heater to my 2210's yanmar motor and it willl start at any temp! But I have started it at down to 0-5 degrees with no "Help" from the block heater and it started pretty good. Smokes for 10-20 seconds but runs smooth after that. I think the glow plugs are a lot better and the combustion chamber and injector designs have helped improve cold weather starting quite a bit.

The coldest I've started my 990 (with Yanmar engine) is -30 deg C, with no block heater. It clanked and clattered and smoked like crazy and generally complained for a little while, but it started surprisingly easily. It has an intake air preheater but no glow plugs - and no compression release. I also use Amsoil synthetic. I definitely wouldn't try it with dino oil at that temperature. Even if you got it to turn over fast enough to start, I don't trust non-synthetics to circulate well enough at that temperature.

ps. I've since installed a block heater. I don't necessarily recommend "abusing" the engine by starting it that cold on a regular basis.
