Our girls just got seven chicks, a little over a week old now. There is at least one cockerel. We'll keep the pullets for laying hens. however I think enough jackarses have moved in around here so that a rooster would be too much for them.

I live far enough out that it won't matter, and its a good thing. The wife just decided she wants chickens, so I'm currently building the Chick Mahal per her direction. (Some things just aren't worth arguing...) The guys across the street also want them. The family next door I just don't care about. They drive the private dirt/gravel road around 40mph and do nothing to maintain (let alone upgrade) the street or their home.

BTW, birds don't have vocal cords. They constrict throat muscles to make the various sounds...

Backyard chickens has a wonderful site with tons of coops. I kind of took a buch of ideas and built ours. Its 4x8(sheet of plywood) with 6' sides, covered with rough cut hemlock and an little run thats 12x4 with hardware cloth on the bottom, and chicken wire all around even over the top...had a buch of hawks and owls around.
