deer repellent

I know the cost of the tubes, I went with the 5' tubes, took a big hit but my oaks are already above that, along with my sugar maples. I have deer running though the tube area all year long, my archery stand will be overlooking it this year.

The only problem, is the dogs like blood meal...

When I worked on a tree farm many years ago we used to spread blood
meal around the tree plots to try to deter deer. The blood meal is also about
13% nitrogn. A good dog will keep deer away too.

I know this won't protect seedlings, but I'm planning on using tree netting on my apple/plum/peach trees this year.

Has anyone tried tree nets and do you have any opinions on them?

I had some Rhodendrons stripped bare a few winters ago, I have been covering them with the black plastic deer net, end of problem.

I have a friend that swears by using a mixture of dish soap mixed with water sprayed on the trees once /month. He has been using it for years. I haven't tried it yet cuz SWMBO wants a friggin 8 ft fence.:thumbsup:

We have tryed them all. From soap to blood meal. Hair, coyote pee. Only two things work for us. The dog during the day when she is out and we use bird netting (much cheaper than deer netting). The stuff to protect blueberry bushesfrom birds. Just drap it around areas you want to protect. They seem to hate it. It is hard to see and easy to get tangled in. When thier nose hits it they poke at it a bit then back right off.

Finished planting 40+ maple trees 10 to 14' tall. Placed 5' tubing to protect the trunk from antler rubs and now I'll let the deer do the pruning for me. I'll find out later as to how this will work out. A few of the smaller trees we placed a fence around these.

An good "old timer" neighbor told me that to keep the deer out of his veg. garden, he'd shoot one and let it lay there. He swore the others kept away after that. I just cant remember how long he would put up with the smell?
