6k axles are typically 8lug, the spindle/brake assemblies are the same from 5200-7k but the drum is different (6lug) for the 5200lb. The difference between 6k and 7k axles are the tubing thickness and spring pack, 6k is 1/4" wall and the 7k is 5/16".
Of course there are exceptions for everything, but this is the difference for most Dexter and similar brand axles.

There are also some 6k 6lug axles but not as common.

I believe the axle rating is on the tag...

California rules have led to de-rated pickup specs too...

580 in Oakland is No Trucks over 9000 lbs except passenger bused and paratransit...
