Deere 425 Electrics issues Quits when brake released or PTO engaged

Typo: I meant that the tractor should NOT stall: This tractor won't start if PTO switch is engaged or if brake is not set. While running, if brake is depressed, PTO will shut off, requiring cycling of the PTO switch after releasing the brake but it won't stall as a result of pressing the brake pedal. Brake has to be set to get off the seat with the engine running. Don't know how other makes and models work; but this is how this tractor works.
The Brake/PTO interaction you mention still doesn't make sense to me. Per the manual that Trevj linked to, the PTO will cut out when you go into reverse (unless the RIO switch is pressed), but it doesn't mention anything about the brake causing the PTO to shut off.

Yeah. Dunno. First I knew about it was reading it this AM. Gonna go check to see if the PTO switch has a spring loaded 'lift' position above the "On".

I can say with some certainty that the PTO as I used the mower yesterday, did not take any other inputs from me when I backed up to maneuver. Would be more than just a minor PITA, and given that the seat switch was already wired out, I think it possible that if it did work that way originally, it may have been modified.

Gotta find a balance between safe and useable eh?

Cheers

Might not make sense to you but that is how these 400 series work. There is no reverse cut out (something I hate about the new ones), unless they changed it on the last model years. I've used 4 different ones; all worked the same way. I've been using mine for 19 years and it still works perfectly. Touch the brake; PTO shuts off; engine continues to run unabated. Try to start with the PTO switch out; won't hit a lick. Try to start without depressing the brake, won't do it. Get off the seat without setting the brake, engine will stall. Want to mow in reverse, can do it all day without touching a single defeat mechanism.
