Honestly I have NO Problems with my MX6...

But I would recommend the MX5. You do need to properly ballast the setup...

Shoot I gave out bad info. on that last post. The list price on an MX-5 is $2068. 23% off of that would be $1592. I agree with you that $1950 is way too high on an MX-5.

I recently purchased a new 4310 eHydro and included a new LX5 in the deal. John Deere offers a special price if you purchase it with the tractor but it must be on the same invoice. I paid $985 for the LX5 cutter with the laminated wheel and slip clutch. I also considered the MX5 then decided it would cut more than the tractor was capabile of handling (overkill). I have cut most brush and trees up to 3/4 to 1" with ease. I only have attempted trees of the softer wood type such as pines though. I have hit a couple of things while backing into heavy patches that slipped the clutch but the tractor bogged with it. That's why I think if you try to cut anything much larger, even with a heavier cutter, the tractor is going to be the limiting factor.

I would consider the iMatch system if you are going to be changing implements because changing implements is a little more difficult due to everything is tighter/stiffer than older tractors. I used to have a MF135 and changing implements was easy because wear allowed the arms to move freely. I use a 72" woods finish mower to mow, Lx5 to bush hog, yard box, and woods landscape rake regularly so I change implement frequently.

VTer,
I have a MX-6 that I put behind my 4320 and it has been doing a great job on brush.
I do leave the loader on with the four in one bucket and the balance seems just right.
I do have a few more ponies under the hood but I feel you will be in good shape with this cutter and your machine. The flywheel effect of the large stump jumper and the heavy blades is able to keep things moving under there when you get in the tuff stuff.
You will see what i mean when youb hear how long it takes the cutter to wind down after you shut off the PTO.

<font color="green">So what does one do if they want a heavier duty 4 foot rotary cutter than the LX4 since JD does not make a MX4?

Go with a "color" other than green?

Would you believe... John Deere! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Welland Works, Welland Ontario.

I would not be as inclined away from the LX4. I fll the biggest problem with the LX 5 and 6 is sidewall strength. If you swing wide and knock a fence post, you could really crumple one. And the original poster mention commercial cutting, where you have no idea what might be lurking...

An LX4 is smaller and far less likely to catch things, and you won't be using one commercially...

But there are other choices. I like Midwest, but none are around here, (they even come in green) And in a 4 foot size there ought to be lotsa choices (although the same applies, once you add chains and slip clutch to any of them, the Deere is priced right...)

I ran out and got the tag that was on my loader level indicator. It says John Deere Welland Works, Welland, Ontario. Think it's somewhere in the vicinity of Toronto.

My LX4 cutter just says Made in Canada.

A friend of mine who bought a 2210 with LX4 cutter says his was made in China. Think his eyesight is bad. Think he read "Canada" as "China".

My experience with a JD rotary cutter was good. I used a 5' medium duty cutter like the MX-5 for 10 years with my 950 which had just a little less power than the 4310. It cut nearly anything it crossed and shredded the material well.

Some time ago I bought a 3 acre lot that was completely overgrown with pine and gum saplings 1" to 3" in diameter and so thick with brambles even the rabbits couldn't get through. With the FEL bucket about a foot off the ground, tractor in 1st gear low range that cutter made mulch of the entire lot in a day. The racket was incredible but neither tractor or cutter ever slowed down. It was fun and my neighbors were delighted.

The MX-5 is iMatch compatible if you want to go that route. Look carefully at top struts on the MX-5 and you will see how it is designed to provide the necessary float that is normally provided by a floating toplink. The iMatch (and other quick hitches) don't support a floating top link and implements like rotary cutters and groomimng mowers must be able to swivel at the draft link pin connections. Check to see if the Woods cutter can float when used with the IMatch. Just because the pins fit does not mean it is compatible.
