I see this now. I may have even adjusted the exhaust valve while the cam follower was resting on the compression relief. The engine starts and runs normally but I am going to check this before running the engine again.

If I set the engine on TDC by aligning the timing marks on the ignition coil then isn't the exhaust valve going to be in the release position and partially open? If so then where do you position the piston when adjusting? I'm thinking that I will just turn the crankshaft a little past TDC until I see the exhause valve close.

I removed the valve covers and spark plugs. I can feel the click of the compression release device if I hold my finger on the exhaust valve rocker arm and rotate the engine. It is a small click. The noise that I get when I turn the engine off is more of a fairly loud click.

I also have a Gravely mower with a FH500v kawi engine and it has a little clicking noise when I shut it off. This is acceptable to me and now I know that it is the compression release but my Deere is louder.

I still feel that there is something else going on here but I am not willing to go as far as to to take the engine apart to see what it is that's making the noise. I think that it is just going to have to get worse and maybe break before I learn what's making the noise.

I think that my next move is to see if I can find a few of these engines and listen to them. I'd feel a lot better if I could see that they all make that noise.
