I did my 50 hour service on my 4710 myself. It cost about 160 bucks worth of filters, oil, etc. But I did change the fuel filter and the air filters that arent required also. I didnt have to transport it to do this. Its pretty simple to do yourself, just make sure you have a lot of buckets to put the oil in, 9 gallons in the rear end of my hydro.

If you could deliver and pick up the tractor yourself, you'd get the cost down to about $280, which seems to be in line with what others have paid for the first service. And since you need to get it over to the dealer for warranty work anyway, that'd be the best bet for you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Break the cost down into parts, labor, hauling, and time. Then make a decision what to do. Just like eating out, having someone else wait on us is not cheap. That's why they are in the business, to make money off usn's who don't want to do it ourselves.

Figuring $120 for hauling, brings the cost down to $280.
Then 2 hours of their labor (?) for $130-$140, down to $140.
Then subtract the filters, oil, and other parts, and it doesn't leave much left to account for your time if you do it yourself.

But, I think you should do it. The experience would be great, unless you've done it before and don't need anymore.

Otherwise, buying a trailer to haul it would return $120 to you. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you have the time, and do it, let us know on TBN so others can make the educated decision in the future.

Isn't the hydraulic fluid a 200 hour item? I think it is on mine. If you skip that you are talking maybe $30 worth of filters and fluids. If comparing doing it vs dealer it would be important to know if they were going to be doing that.

I got the best deal around on my service from a buddy who's a mechanic for the local Caterpillar dealer. We'd been trying to set a time for him to do it when I happened to be out at my property when he called telling me that his mower just died and wanting to borrow mine. I was just working on my trailer so I loaded my 4200 onto it with the mower on the back and delivered everything with the proviso that he service it while he had it out there at his place. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

He did his mowing that night and I bought the filters and oil he needed the next day and delivered them to him at his work. He did the servicing on it and returned everything to me Saturday AM. I tried to pay him for it and he wouldn't hear of it.

I guess he looked at it as a deal to have a tractor and mower to use delivered within the hour of his dying and I know I looked at it as a bargain to have all my servicing done when I didn't need the machine and have it returned first thing Saturday morning ready to mow.

Holy Cow! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif $120 for round trip! I won't complain about my dealer who charges $25 total for pick up and return. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good choice, Matt. Cost me about $70 to change engine and hydro oil and filters on my 4110, and no more difficult than an oil change. When you clean the hydro suction screen, you'll be glad you didn't wait 'till 200 hrs. As far as 'going over' the loader and mower, you are greaseing fittings and torqueing bolts at regular intervals, right? At that price, it sounds like a good opportunity for your dealer to make some money.

If you're mechanically inclined, the 50 hr maintenance is a piece of cake and you'll know you did everything right! My dealer charges $50 for round-trip pickup/delivery and I am about 18 miles away, $60 for one direction sounds pretty steep to me. Unless my 2210 breaks in half and spews pistons and gears all over the ground, I don't intend to take it back to the dealership for a long, long time.

You should be able to take the broken tail lights off and take them to the dealer for warranty replacement. If they are already aware of this problem, they should give you new lights so you can install them yourself.

As far as the service goes, it really isn't that big a deal, except for containers for all the used oil. I have four five gallon plastic jugs left over from my pressure washer soap that I put the waste oil from my tractor and cars in. When they are full, I take them into a Grease Monkey and dump them for free. Then start filling them up again. Saves a lot of money doing the routine maintenance myself.

Good luck,

DT
