Delivery Truck Made A Mistake ..

I came in this morning to a truck that had "two blown tires". Night dispatcher gave him another truck. I walked out to look over the truck and explain a few questions he had about it. At first it appeared the driver did a panic stop and flatspotted all four, but dispatcher didn't understand why the flats didn't match up. (Because they went flat and broke loose from the rim). The rear axle didn't flat spot, so I immediately assumed rear brakes not working correctly. I thought about it on the way home and realized that the parking brake only operates on a single axle, which explained everything. The driver drove with the parking brake on (bobtailing) till he blew all four tires. Driver hasn't owned up to it yet, but he has been caught...
Good help is hard to get!

The O/P letting the delivery driver off the hook was great, but the driver owning up to it was priceless!

In this day and age, the delivery man did the unthinkable-he owned up to his mistake. Then, you did something almost as unimaginable-you gave him a break. Yes, there are still good people in this world.

A few years back, I had gravel brought in by a guy I'd been referred to. He and I hit it off immediately. I knew that he and his family had been very successful farmers, but got caught in the ag downturn in the early 80's and lost it all. We frequently talked about a number of subjects.

One time I had him bring a load of gravel for my barn lot. I had him
dump the leftover rock next to the barn. In the process of raising the bed, he was too close and one of the hinges put a slice in the wall of the barn-maybe an 1.5" wide and 8-10" long-no big deal. Well, it was a big to him-John had been delivering gravel for over 20 years, and had apparently never had anything like this happen. He was beside himself-he was really upset and wanted me to call his insurance agent to turn in the claim to get it fixed. I finally got him convinced that it was no big deal, and that under no circumstances should he turn in a claim. I told him I'd fix it with a little paint, which is exactly what I did. I told him to just pay it forward.....

John never forgot it, and later did some tractor work for me and wouldn't take anything in the way of payment. So in a way, my own good deed got paid forward if only to me, but I'd be willing to bet it got paid forward to many others ad well.

Sadly, we lost John a while back-I really miss him. But every time I see that slice in the barn, I feel good about how I handled a minor incident of life, and that I had the good fortune to know a great guy.

Oh, to OP, how did that delivery guy damage your gate in the first place? Did he back into it, or did he fail to allow for the wide arc the back of the cargo box made while he was turning? I drove a lot of 24 foot cargo box straight trucks, its really easy to misjudge the turning.

One of my neighbors had been in earlier with his GN to borrow a piece of equipment. I wasn't home that afternnoon when he brought it back, and the damage was done ... he drove under it.

Yesterday he stopped by and asked what he owed me for the gate entrance!! I picked at him awhile telling him I was wondering what happened !!

He stated " I walked all round my trailer Can't see a mark" ... I told him I called the sheriff ... he says "Call them back and tell them to forget it"

I started laughing and he says "what the h.ell is so funny" ... Good thing he's a sport.

He said the same thing blaming the bed!! I said it ain't the beds fault ... its that woman I'm married too.

Not necessarily, Isuzu makes what appears to be as small as 6 foot wide ones (I never actually measured), but it was just a joke anyway.:laughing:

Nothing like country living. Its been my experience that honest people bring out the good in others. Blueriver, not only did the driver and you display what life should be all about, you have a neighbor that is even more remarkable.

I'm sure he was baffled and wondering how the heck did I damage his gate. Walked around his trailer and not a scratch. But who else could have done it, it had to have been me. I better go pay for his gate.

You have nice folks living around you. Country living.

I am laughing as I think about it. He wears overalls, straw hat and chews Red Man ... I can see him in my head walking around that trailer, hat cocked and mumblin to himself as he spits.
