Yeah, I know what your talking about, my brother-in-law only uses expensive synthetics in his twin Catepillar V-16 turbodiesels after he blew two turbochargers due to turbo oil coking with only 6,000 hours on the clock. Unfortunately for him, when the turbos ate it from the dino oil overheating, he was 2,500 miles out in the Atlantic!!!! His mistake cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Since he switched to using full synthetic turbodiesel motor oil exclusively, it has saved him millions! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Delo 400 *DELETED*

Thom, I know at the Redline website they talk about the extremes that synthetic can operate in. I personally would use a synthetic if I knew that would be an issue. I have considered a Subaru Outback as an alternative to our current van. It has a turbocharger and the heat in gas engine turbos I understand can be extreme. It would surely be a time I would consider a synthetic. I know todays jet engines are running synthetic's.

If no dino oil is used in the production of synthetic oil why is the price of synthetic seem to be going up just like dino ?

I have still seen no evidence that synthetic oil makes your engine last longer. I am sure the SYN producers would promote it if they could.

Rat, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman chartered one of his yachts to atttend the Cannes Film festival a few years back, about 3/4's of the way there one of the two CAT V-16's ate it and they were dead in the water. Had to be towed back to Savannah, Georgia and put in dry dock. The entire side of the ship had to be cut out to get the CAT V-16 out after the turbo bit the dust on dino oil. Cost was astronmical.

No problems since everything is 100% synthetic now! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good synthetic is made from short chain low molecular weight alkanes in a gasesous state, primarily from natural gas products. Group III synthetics are hydrocracked petroleum, so no change there. Cost of transportation from site of manufacture to distribution points and final end of sale location is the same for dino and synthetic. The costs of transporation has risen about 20% recently, you may notice this next time you purchase fuel.

Nope, the huge CAT V-16's were replaced with brand new iron, and all of the other turbodiesels were changed over to full synthetic only, no more dino and no more problems.
