Hey guys...

I demo'ing a house soon, and I really don't know what to use.

To give you a frameset, the house is

around 2000 sq ft footprint
two stories,
all of the elec/plumbing/gas and other doodads are out

only the wood framing and exterior is remaining(shell).

some suggested a mini ex, which i think is the right choice.

and what method should i use for demo'ing it?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Is it on a slab or over a basement?

An excavator could do it nicely, especially one with a claw/moveable thumb.

Push the walls in until you have a big pile, use the bucket and thumb to rip off pieces and stick them in a dumpster.

Call your local Fire Dept.,they just love to burn things down for training. Mike

I don't think a mini excavator is a very good choice. Especially for a two story. Figure the eves are gonna be 17 to 18 feet high, and depending on the gable, peak and pitch, the roof could be well over 20 feet high.

I'd want something that I coudl reach up to at least the gutters and be far enough away to avoid something falling on me while tearing it apart.

My full sized backhoe has a 14 foot reach and I was on the small side on small barn I tore down. It was 12 feet at the gutters and I had more than one close call. In hindsite, that wasn't one of my smarter decisions. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Sometimes it's cheaper to pay a little more up front than to risk serious injury.

I like the fire idea!!! Otherwise do like Tye Pennington on Extreme Home Makeover. They got it down to an art on that show.

In many areas the fire department will come out and set it on fire and use it as a 'training excercize' while it burns. Your house is demolished and the fire department gets hands on training. Everyone wins. You might want to call the fire chief and see if he wants to burn it.
