I work 33 acres. We have had a JD A for the last 35 years here. 38 PTO HP about 5000 lbs. 25 years ago added a 60 HP TLB Industrial 2wd about 6500 lbs weight, digs down 12'-14', & loader lifts a 1/2 yard +. Started looking at a newer tractor 2-3 years ago.

Ended up with a need list of 3K lbs loader lift, quik tach, (tired of climbing over TLB arms for maintenance) hydraulic grapple bucket, (tired of chaining stuff to loader bucket) Forks, 3-4 yard snow bucket, 3PT CAT 2 with max lift to hoist an end of a 40' storage container (home made 3pt lifting tongue.) MFWD to deal with mud & snow & front wheel braking ability on slopes. ROPS, Seat belts, etc. Lights (with an alternator big enough to run them.)

Want list included cab heat & air, kid seat, reliability durability etc.

Found the slightly used & new CUT pricing high. Even at auctions these little tractors are hot items similar to ATV's around here!

Big three smaller utility class tractors took a jump in price & cab used versions are made of unobtanium. They sell faster than CUTS & ATV's!

The 10 year old gold standards JD 6300 6400's are priced in the category above but used with 2300 hours into a 10000 hour life. Almost bought one of these except the turning radius on older design frame takes 2 acres to turn around. Did I mention the old JD A will spin around in it's own wheelbase?

I felt the CUT size was simply too small for what I want to do, decided on a JD 5105 until I drove it also way too light. With my slopes I'd have daylight under the rears all day long!

I ended up buying a new Zetor 65HP class, 5 tons with iron wheel weights. Covered the needs & wants lists at the price point of a high end CUT. The kid seat has been coveted by kids up to age 70!

Snow removal that took 3-4 hours with the TLB now with the Zetor & 4 yard bucket takes 45 mins! It has out pushed a JD 350 dozer moving boulders although I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Have fun searching!

Thank you, thank you for your assistance. As a result, I am picking up a CaseIH DX35 on Friday to demo this weekend. The dealer is great and understands my difficulty. He said he would rather have me be comfortable in my decision by lending me one than to get something I am not happy with. Also, he said he would rather that I apply the $$ I would on a rental towards an implement in his establishment.

I picked the 35 as I believe that it is the smallest that I could possible be happy with. I hope that I am surprised and satisfied in its performance. I am greatful to the dealer for this opportunity and am looking forward to the weekend.

So guys, what should I do to size it up?

Thanks again for the input and the guidance.

well, if you have or can borrow a brushhog that would be a start. You get to run the tractor for a hour or so and get to know it.

If the loader has a tooth bar, rip some brush. Pick things up with the loader, wet pile of dirt, logs, see what it will do. Get a feel for it.

If you have a spear and a round bale, now is the time /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think that you will find the 35 hp to be pretty impressive. Even if you think it is underpowered, you will have something to compare the next one with.

By the way, sounds like you have a smart dealer. If he is willing to give you a demo while you are tire kicking he is pretty confident that you will like the machine. I do like those Case/Farmalls, to bad around here the price was way out of my budget.

Demo the best proving grounds. Run it around your place to make sure it will fit between around things & when it's warmed up go get dirty! Think like you've had it for a year & go to work.

Well, I brought home the D35 4WD today. It has 8 hours on it and has a Bush Hog M300 loader on it. The dealer says that the Bush Hog has more capacity and is about a grand cheaper than the factory loader. It is not nearly as attractive as the factory unit, but functionality and capacity are what really matters to me. The dealer also threw a 6 foot box blade on the back. I think that this will be a good test and will show me the power that 4WD can deliver as I blade the driveway tomorrow morning.

I also called a dealership today notorious for their low pricing in NC to do a reality check on prices offered at the local Case dealer. To my surprise, the local dealer beat the price quote by about $20 on their pre-dicker, advertised pricing. If I am not able to get them down any further, I would still save over $1200 (accounting for shipping) from NC.

I am excited and hopeful that the D35 works out for me. Tomorrow will tell!

So... how do you like it?

I'm looking into the same tractor, except with a FEL and box. The dealer is quite anxious to get rid of it, as he has 3 and they are the 2004 variety. I've been contemplating (a) brand new big 3, (b) used ag, (c) grey market, or (d) one the chinese brands. As of right now, I'm leaning this direction. So, your personal experience would be greatly appreciated!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW - dealer is offering this out the door and delivered (350+ miles) for $16,000.

I liked it a lot! I have found my tractor make I believe. I was pleasantly surprised by its capabilities, but believe that some extra wheel weights would go a long way. It would be helpless without 4WD as the 6 foot box would cause slippage that would disappear with a pull of the 4wd lever!

I gave it a good workout by blading the driveway, pushing over trees and working the loader. I even used the bucket to try and lift the front of my fifth wheel (knew it would not lift it) to see if it would try to pitch forward and lift the rear off of the ground--it behaved itself. It had the Bush Hog loader M 360 loader on it that the dealer says will save about a grand. Is the one that you were quoted equipped with the factory one?

I do think that when I pull the trigger with the tax return that I will opt for the 4 cylinder 40 horse. I believe that the extra inertia of the extra cylinder, torque rise and extra engine bearings will be a much better deal--and is reasonably priced. I believe that the added torque from the 4 banger would pull me through where otherwise the 35 might not. However, if I could not afford the difference, I could be quite happy with the 35.
