The motorcycle safty course is one of the best programs out there. Even when you get your bike and become comfortable, you can and should go back periodicly to do the advanced class. It keeps you fresh and allows you to practice evasive manuvers you normally wouldnt do.Cool thing. Even if you dont ride it should be manditory.

RobertN,

That comesz out to 24-25 mph. Thats an extremely fast pace for a commuter. Heck it is pretty much a sprint for most club riders.

TBrown, You want to thicken your skin... Well I recommend a diet of TWINKIES for starters.. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But if it was up to me , I would probably do exactly what your doing or even as suggested by others ride a bike as long as it was safe especially since its only 4 miles ... I'm past the age of "being cool", Health and $$ is more important than looking like a DORK crusing 4miles to work and back... Just my .02 (for your tank /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif) you go Lance boy, next stop France.

Oh and don't forget the AH-OOGH HORN on the handle bars and streamers on the grips..

I agree with all of you who've pointed out that the GPz would be safer than the moped, but that bike is a sticky subject. My wife has no problem with it at all, in fact she used to ride on it with me quite a bit a decade ago. We even rode it to Niagara Falls on vacation once, but we always had to keep her participation a secret. Her parents feel that sportbikes are inherently dangerous and that my old Kawi will someday be the death of me. I personally blame the media and a handful of bad eggs for their perceptions; every time there is a bad accident or improper behavior involving a sportbike it gets sensationalized. For instance, last summer a kid was clocked at 162 mph (on a Hayabusa) in Thendara,NY and it recieved national attention. Things like that give everyone a black eye. Still, my in-laws only have my best interests at heart and really don't want my daughter to grow up without me, so I'm willing to let it sit for now.

As far as a bicycle, I actually used to ride one to work when I was a bit younger. The hills are killers, though. There are two between my home and work, up and down. The downhills are great, but going up is tough. I'm no Lance Armstrong. By the time I got to work I was a sweatin' pig, ditto for when I got home. Looking like a doofus on a moped is a whole lot more appealing than pedalling that bike, I'll tell ya!

This doesn't mean I'm not trying to get in shape... not at all. It's just that the shape I'm working toward happens to be round./forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

He also needs a couple of cards attached to the 'ped with clothes pins so that he can get that neat grrrrrrrrrrrr when the cards hit the spokes. Course with the 50 pound extra pounds on the 'ped, the cards might just be more of a wack wack wack wack. Maybe downhill will get the grrrrrrrrrr. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And a long safety flag to put on the back so people can see him.

AND don't forget the helmet. Got to have that as well.

The AH-OOGH HORN is fine for traffic but for pedestrian safety sake he needs one of the the little chrome bike bells. Don't want to startle any walkers.... Ring Ring. Ring Ring.

A bright orange safety vest might be a thing to consider as well.

All of this will make YOU and the public much safer and I dare say, will brighten up THEIR day. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm more than happy to help. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"Her parents feel that sportbikes are inherently dangerous and that my old Kawi will someday be the death of me."

Take her parents for a ride on the back of both of them and see if they change their mind about which one is safer. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When we had kids I stopped riding motorcycles. The problem is there seems to be more cars than ever. I'd already been in a few minor fender benders, or should I say mirror and signal benders and I figure it is just a matter of time before a car or truck smushes me real good. I want to be around until the kids can take care of themselves. After that, I'll get back in the saddle with a nice touring bike for my golden years. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
