Tractor
Oliver
Hi every one I have a Oliver 1957 super 55.
1 month ago, I change o? and filter (engine). yesterday after 2 hours of work with my tractor I heard a taping noise from the engine.
So I stop the engine and check the o? but smoke came out from the deep stick.
ad 3 pint of o? and park the tractor to its place.
I could hear like a little hammer noise. watt should i do Thanks in advance

Drain the oil again through a coffee filter and see if there are any metal particles. Unfortunately at this temperature the oil may not flow very easily.

You say TAPPING noise. Glad you didn't say KNOCKING noise.
it it is a tap or a click it could be the valves. I doubt the lifters are hydraulic being that old. If they are hydraulic it could be just a piece of junk getting into one and starving it from oil. if they are solid lifters it could be a push rod has come out of one of the lifters and is hitting on something (kind of unlikely).
Point being is the tractor missing on one cyl? May want to take off the valve cover and see if all things are in place. You can put your finger on each valve while the tractor is running and sometimes feel from the rythem which valve it is. If it is a valve.

If the engine is not missing, Not a valve and not a tap but a deep KNOCK then the plot thickens.

Valves are not a big deal. A knock sound that seems to be in time with the speed of the engine could mean a rod/bearing
is coming or has come loose.
What happened to make it start making a sound. Were you revving it up a lot? going real fast? if so then again maybe a rod coming loose.
Sometimes you can get a wooden stick and put one end to your ear and the other to the engine trying to locate where the noise is coming from. they make a stethiscope for listening to engine noises.

Or possible oil starvation. Something has clogged up an oil line and a part is starved for oil and is slapping around.
May need to sneak a peek in the oil pan.

G'day I would be dropping the sump and checking the big end bearings I have had engines with a tapping sound that you would swear it was a tappet or valve and it is a big end worn allowing the piston to go up and just touch the head.
