Last week mowing with my 928d Grasshopper I noticed it was making a wierd noise where the spindles are located.I popped the cover and found a spindle that was totally gutted as well as the sheave.I grease my spindles after every mow which is 3acres maybe every 2 weeks.I read that too much grease is just as bad as not enough grease. So how much and how often should this be done?I've got a new spindle ,should I grease it until I see grease and how often?Don't have a manuel for the deck so hoping some one can help me with this.thanks in advance...russ

Greasing sealed bearings that weren't designed to be greased is one of my pet peeves. I know that folks with a brand new grease gun, especially those with a new battery operated one, will get all pumped up:laughing:

Greasing sealed bearings that weren't meant to be greased? If thats the case, there shouldn't be a grease zerk. The only problem I've heard of by over greasing is maybe blowing out the seal. For some reason, I've always gone by the three pump rule. Nobody taught me this, but three pumps of grease usually seems like the right amount for a bearing. For pins on a end loader, I usually go until I see a little old grease forced out.

I have a Kubota BX, and I think it had a sticker on the loader that says every 10 hours.

Do you wash your deck with the water hose? When it is hot?

I never wash the deck,I scrape it with a plastic putty knife.Guess I should have been more specific, the spindles on my mower have zirks.Could a belt not tensioned right have done this?I put new belts[2] on it this spring and they were really tight,I had to bring the adjusters out all the way to get them on,do you think this could have destroyed this spindle?..russ

Lots of info missing. How many hours on the spindles? Have you owned the mower since new? Using the right type of grease? If mixing greases are the thickening agents compatible? And yes, IMO you are over greasing the spindles.

Just my opinion here, but I don't think over greasing caused your failure, unless you were putting 10 pumps of grease in every time. I had a cheaper mower at one time, and broke some spindles on it, and I always thought it was from hitting things, like stumps, rocks etc. Sometimes its just a defective part.

You hit the nail on the head. WAY too much info missing. Bearings do NOT last forever, even when greased regularly. For all we know, this machine has 5000 hours on them origional spindle bearings:confused2:
