Detaching M246

This FEL cannot be detached with the bucket facing straight down like some of you said you do, as can be seen in this picture. The FEL legs are no where near the ground.

Re: Detaching M246

Mine won't detach in that position either. I have to have it flat, then angle it down somewhat. The FEL winds up with a slightly forward tilt - keeps the rain out of the bucket that way.

Re: Detaching M246

Just curious and as a new guy I still have a couple of dumb questions of my quota left. Besides the reason Danny gave (taking up space in the garage), why do you folks detach your FEL? Are you talking the whole rig or just the bucket? I've had my FEL on since I got it and haven't come up with a reason to take it off. Perhaps a FM snowblower?

Thanks

Re: Detaching M246

Dutchman,

Funny you should ask.

One dealer I visited (not the dealer I bought from) said I'd never take the FEL off when I asked about doing this on a regular basis. I was wondering about time, effort and quick-detach seal life. I'm mowing a lawn not a pasture so I'm concerned about compaction and manuverabity. I take my FEL off when I mow so it goes on and off once a week. Without the FEL my equipment is under 2000 Lbs. and I still see and feel tire depression when I mow. It's at an accpetable level now, but barely. The additional 600-700 Lbs. of the loader could only make this worse. I did a little mowing with the loader on at first, and manuverability and "feel" was terrible. I'm sure the 3 minutes it takes to take it on and off is time well spent since I think it would take me much longer than this with all the careful manuvering around landscaping, trees, structures, Etc.

So I guess that dealer was wrong. I answered my own questions about time and effort to put on and take off the FEL but I guess only time will tell on the seal longevity question. BTW - I park the tractor between the FEL arms even when its not attached and it takes up about 1 foot more space in this configuration versus when its attached.

Re: Detaching M246

That makes sense. I don't finish mow with mine. I do brush hog but I'm not worried about compaction then. That does remind me, I thought about taking it off once to get my backhoe into a tight spot. However my manual said to keep the FEL on for ballast with the BH.

Re: Detaching M246

I remove the whole thing everytime I mow, takes 10 mins at most for each, removal and re-installation.
I do it for less weight and I somehow seem to lose things if I keep it on there when I mow. Things like part of my deck, a tree, a now lop-sided mailbox, etc. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
