Detergent or Non-Detergent Oil in Old Tractors?

Long ago I put Delo (diesel high detergent) in a 50 Olds v8 that had valve covers packed solid with crud. That collapsed the hydraulic lifters. Lots of valve clatter, and maybe rod knock, in what had been a decent old car.
I wouldn't change from what the engine is used to.
