Tractor
Deutz D 30 06-S
Good evening,

I have recently began helping out at my family's farm. Unfortunately my father has passed away leaving me unexpectedly to step up and figure out how to perform tasks and operate equipment around the farm.
The main tractor that is used is a Deutz D 30 06-S. I was able to figure out how to turn it on this morning, by turning the key and holding out what I assume is called the glow plug for 5 seconds (circled red). It started right up. I drove around for about an hour to get a lay of the land and feel for the tractor. It also took me a couple minutes to turn it off, finally found the fuel shutoff. Not sure what its called but I pulled it for a few seconds and let the engine stall out(circled in green).

I then took a quick break and was going to resume by hooking up to a bush hog to do some clearing.
I pulled the glow plug and heard the same clicking from this morning but it never turned over.
After trying for a few minutes I gave it a rest and tried again. This time no more clicking could be heard.
I have checked the battery for voltage, it read 12v solid. I tested the load and it dropped down to 3v so I switched out for another battery that was in better condition. Still no luck. Im at a standstill for now. Please help.

You say the battery you swapped in was in better condition but how much better? Have you tried jump starting it? If jumping it works then those batteries are toast are the battery connections or ground connection need cleaned. Also possible that the cables are corroded inside the insulation causing a problem. I just noticed in the first photo that there is pieces of wood I assume holding the battery from sliding around. I can't read the battery number but is it possible that you are using a smaller battery with a lower CCA rating than required? Just some thoughts.

Morning guys,

Thank you for the responses and help. I was able to get her working this weekend. It was a simple fix, a wire connection was loose. If anyone could tell me what it is called please let me know (see attached). I believe its some sort of starter wire.
I also switched the battery out for another one. The worn out one was dropping to 3V with a load test. The better condition one was holding 11V strong with a load. I have read that an LT40 battery is recommended over standard car batteries, I will upgrade down the line.
With those two fixes it turned over immediately. Finally able to get some clearing done with the bushhog!
Thanks again fellas.

Are you looking for the name of the terminal at the wire? Those are called spade terminals. In this case, a female spade terminal.

You should be able get one of those cheap kits with a bunch of different terminal and the crimp tool for it.

At 12V "solid" the battery was probably only about 50% charged.

Thank you sir, I am not sure of how it was so loose. No risk in the connection draining the battery correct?
