Dexter Axle question

i allways wire brush any rusty or dirty mating surfaces before mounting a wheel

I didn't think about that earlier, but you're sure right. I always want the mating surfaces to be clean before mounting a wheel.

I have AL-KO ( Hayes ) 7000 pound axles and the lugs are loose every time I check them; which is now every time I use it. The axle manufacture says to go by the wheel recomendation but not to go over 120#. Then it says unless the wheel manfacturer specifies otherwise use 85 to 95 for the final torque. I didn't get any information about the wheels so I have been going with 95#. Anyone seen where the white spoke wheel ever say less than 120#? I believe the studs are 1/2 inch but I should check.

We torque all the wheels to 120# in our marine business. Never had a problem other than we broke off one stud on my car haul trailer. Not sure if it was from torque or another problem because it broke off the first time I torqued it. Had no problems since on this trailer in 6 years so I assume it was just a bad stud.

Something we were discussing at work the other day was wet torque vs dry. I always grease studs so they don't get rusted on but it was pointed out that allows me to possibly get the nuts tighter for the same torque value. I've always done this even on all my vehicles. Never had one loose and never fought getting them off afterwards.
