Westbrooklawn, unfortunately for your tractor, it is now junk. Fortunately for you, I am willing to dispose of it for you at no charge. Let me know where to pick it up. :)

Heck, the other day my wife borrowed my 3/4 ton yukon. She came back about 5 minutes later saying it was shifting funny and wouldn't go very fast. Yup, I had previously used it to move a trailer around and left it in 4lo. No damage, but that'll teach me to let her use the truck. :)

I have a 2003 F150 4x4. I don't love it but it has been a great truck. The thing that just drives me out of my mind though is the 4wd shift knob. It sits right beside the air conditioning knob and is the same size and shape! That's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. I have put it into 4wd going 45 -50 mph down the road thinking I was turning the AC on. Fortunately you can feel it shift into 4wd so I snatch it back out. It has happened twice. No grinding, no metal flying out onto the road or anything, but it can't be good for the thing.

I really miss a good basic mechanically linked gear shift for engaging 4wd. What is wrong with a real gear shift?

Just as long as he did not drive around in circles and really wind up the axles in 4WD drive.

PS No harm.

The tires should take the majority of the wear of the 4wd on hard surface. I'd be as concerned about driving the tractor long distances as top speed, as I don't think they are designed for extended use like that.

What would be the problem with driving at top speed? Surely the engine can handle it, top speed on my tractor is not much more than the proper PTO rpms.

When Katrina hit New Orelans, a contractor came in and purchased five brand new M-5000 series Kubotas with FELs to take out there.

He was back with five broken M-5000 series Kubota tractors two weeks later.

All had been driven in 4WD on pavement.

The extremely expensive repairs were NOT covered under warranty.

Heck, all the way from Florida to New Orleans would be tough even in 2WD :D

I did the same thing just this weekend. Drove approx. 3 miles in 4WD. Happened to ask the dealer yesterday, he said won't hurt a thing.......

I have a 78' KUBOTA L295 DT that has been in 4WD nearly it's entire life; on and off hard surfaces, and it still works great with no howling or whining! They do differentiate between axles, and don't "wind-up" like some 4wd jeeps, trucks, and etc. I have several thousand hours on it now. I also checked with the dealer when I purchased it new, and he said most leave them in 4WD full-time, and the Kubota rental yards told me the same? There is some stress however; which requires a slight movement in the reverse direction to disengage. You got a great tractor and enjoy it, and you will never wear it out with a little TLC.
