In my first post I am partially wrong. I had never called the police before but about twenty years ago I had a guy scare me so bad that I drove to the local city police station and grabbed a cop in the parking lot and sent him after a drunk. I had pulled out from work and the guy passed me in the right lane, crossed over in front of me close enough that I had to hit my brakes. Then he crossed thru the center and drove all the way across the northbound lane, he was headed south, causing a northbound car to slam on it's brakes to avoid a head on collision. He had vanity plates on his vehicle so I had little trouble reporting the number and make of vehicle.

That was before cell phones so I didn't call.

I did call around and find out who it was and tried to visit him at his business. Not a good idea but I was young and stupid. My wife was also young and much smarter and stopped my inquiry.

... hands-free connections for your cel phone, so that you could just push a button on your steering wheel to answer the phone and/or to call someone using voice recognition.

That would probably help, but I find that holding a conversation distracts me enough to affect my driving. I doubt that I am the only one. The safest thing to do in my opinion is to avoid the phone totally while driving.

BTW, you did good, OP.

I drive 1 hour home late from work each night, and get to see plenty of drunks on my way home.
If they are just swerving a little I'll let it slide, but if they are driving like a fool I will safely follow and call the police until they pull him over.
This year alone I have been nearly hit by 2 wrong way drivers.

Bout 3 years ago is when I got a phone that can text. I find I use it most often at work when I am tied up in the noisy plant and can't here, texting is geat. Weather it's work related asking a coworker a question. Regarding an issue, or simply texting tie wife reminding her to do something.

I've heard recently that cel phone use in drivers causes more deaths than drunk driving now.

One hopeful thing is the fact that more and more new cars are coming out now with hands-free connections for your cel phone, so that you could just push a button on your steering wheel to answer the phone and/or to call someone using voice recognition.

That is not a solution. It is the act of talking on the phone, which takes your attention off the road, not the mere holding of it. It will take NTSB to force manufacturers to include a circuit that disables all but 911 from working if the phone is moving over a certain speed.

No amount of ranting, advertising, etc. will get those idiots off their play toys.

That will never happen as it would also turn off phones for everyone who carpools, rides the bus, train, in a vehicle as a passenger, etc, etc, etc.
If its not the phone, it will be the radio, the GPS, the HVAC, the burger, putting on their makeup, etc.
