Hi guys, question on diesel fuel additive. What additive would you recommend when diesel will sit or has sat for a while. For example, in a machine that has run sporatically over months or years?

I am think that water, among other concerns, would need to be addressed.

Thanks,
Joel

I just got some of the marine additive from West Marine (their own brand). I cannot say that it is better or worse than anything else.

At the advice of one of the experienced TBN guys I also put in an ounce or so of 2 cycle outboard oil. I presume that was to increase lubricity.

Again, this ain't science (at least regarding how I did it).

Does the marine additive have an algaecide (sp?)?
I don't need it for the tractor (it never sits idle long enough to grow anything), but my motorhome will be sitting for awhile, and I would prefer not to have to change the fuel filter on that thing.

I'm not certain. West Marine does sell diesel microbicides but I vaguely recall that the "Sta-Bil" additive does not include that, it's mostly focused on ethanol related issues and other stabilizing stuff.

I've been using PRI-D and been very happy with it.

I use it in my gasoline as well, on the advice of a dealer that it wasn't significantly different enough than PRI-G, and I've had great results (way, way better than Sta-Bil).

One of the best things you can do as far as water accumulation is to make sure you keep the fuel tank full so that condensation in the tank is reduced that is how water gets in the fuel. If the tank is full there is no place for condensation to accumulate. I would also as I mentioned in anothe post put some Howes fuel treatment in your tank this will absorb any water and prevent your fuel from gelling in the winter time. It's good stuff me and many of my friends use it in our eighteen wheelers, HOWES guarantees that if you use it according to their reccomendation and your fuel gels they will pay for the tow. It absorbs any water so that it can safely pass through your fuel system. I don't know what it costs on the your side of the country, here on the west coast it's about $12. a half gallon. It won't hurt anything if you over dose it.
