NEW Fuel Regulation for Off-Road Diesel
Posted by Hardman Oil Company at 9/24/2007 9:02 AM and is filed under Regulations
Effective October 1, 2007 Hardman Oil Co., Inc. will no longer be able to sell #2 heating oil as Non-Road/Off-Road Diesel. Under the Federal Clean Air Act, the US EPA is requiring all non-road engines to use low-sulfur diesel. Low sulfur diesel contains 500 ppm sulfur content compared to the 5000 ppm sulfur content of #2 heating oil. At this time Hardman Oil Co., Inc. does not have a seperate truck to accommodate this different fuel. We are sorry for the inconvenience. For more information please visit the US EPA website at: Control of Emissions of Air Pollution From Nonroad Diesel Engines and Fuel [[pp. 28327-28376]] | Federal Register Environmental Documents | USEPA

Home heating oil (some still call it #2) is a very different product from ULSD. Many years ago you could say home heating oil and diesel fuel were the same because they were. NOT ANY MORE! HHO still has up to In the refinery I work at, HHO also has the addition of a yellow marker dye that is not visible to the naked eye which became required by some government agency. It requires some sort of scanner to ascertain if it is in the fuel. The dye is called Unimark. (Scroll down the page to find Uinmark) The bill of laden for home heating oil clearly states it is not to be used as any sort of motor fuel. As stated in the post by dirtworksequip, that started late in the summer of 2007 of early fall 2007.
Now if it were me, I would use up the fuel in my old tractor. However it your tractor is new enough to require ULSD, find some other use for it.

BE CAREFUL :eek::eek::eek:
See my post called CJ-4 Oil.
Burning fuel oil and using the new CJ-4 spec oils is NOT reccomended. There seems to be an issue with how this oil and the fuel oil react and it causes injector problems. If you use any older spec API oil you should be fine. It's just the new CJ-4 spec oil.
This came from a Kubots engineer I spoke with today.

Around here there is just one fuel.
If you want it for your furnace they call it Home Heating Oil .
If you want it for your tractor it's called Diesel.

Answer: Same, same.
Been using in Mercedes diesels over past 35 years with no issues. Trick is to pick it up with a pump dropped thru top of tank. The pick up tube must be about an inch off the bottom of the tank. Following this simple plumbing allow fuel oil rest a day so stirred-up crap and any condensate (H2O) settles where it belongs. The 'inch off the bottom' principal essentially is tantamount to 'filtration' by gravity.

One additional note: Untreated fuel oil tends to develop algae over time. Algae killsfuel filters. Algecide conditioners are available at truck stops for under ten bucks; some additional insurance!

Your Gramps supplemented with motor oil to make up for lower lubricity of kerosene - as compared to innate lubricity of off-road diesel aka #2.

I have heard several rumors about fuels and how similar they are like Jet fuel and kerosene being similar and diesel and #2 fuel oil are also the same. I know I have burned jet fuel in my kerosene heaters and never any isues but I have recently replaced my home furnace with a heat pump and now have about 200 gallons of fuel oil left. How close is this to off road deisel. I hear stories from grand pa telling me he would burn kerosene and fuel oil in his bulldoser when he could not get deisel and his supliment was motor oil added to the deisel. I guess my big question is what to do with 00 gallons of #2 fuel oil??
