I would be scared to death of a new DMX diesel, for a few years anyway. JMO

Can you give a reason for being "scared" ? Just curious.

If you want true 40mpg even with a diesel. The vehicle has to be a light weight 3000lb aerodynamic low and narrow ecobox. There is only 129,500btu in a US gallon of diesel. It also takes a set amount of energy to accelerate 3000lbs to 55mph. Now you are trying to obtain 40mpg with a tier IV diesel.
When I sit down and figure total vehicle expenses per mile of purchase, insurance, service etc. In a years time the difference between 30 and 40 mpg isn't worth the bother of trying to save just a few scrawny bucks.

Diesel will either be the same VM inline four DOHC used in the Cruz or more likely the 3.0L V6 DOHC used in the Fiat Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I sincerely hope the diesel Colorado does well for GM. The Tacoma needs some competition. :)

I wonder what insane price tag they will have? Yeah, I know, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" :(

Finally, finally, finally....
And I'm sorry for those of you who own the current small GM trucks but
these new ones should be an enormous improvement. I wonder why GM is so afraid to bring
the diesel in sooner. Emissions? Boy to be first on the block with a diesel would be a real marketing coup; if
they dawdle, someone else will beat them to it.

I doubt it will be a VM diesel. Gm sold their half to fiat last month.

Duramax = Isuzu partnership still - No ?

Or has that business relationship changed ?

About the only upside to the EPAs continued quest for un-negotiated trade barriers, higher profits, and allegedly cleaner air is that a diesel platform often has a year or 3 of field use in another market before it shows up here. Sometimes we are a generation behind, engine life-cycle wise.

I suspect this 2.8 is already in customer's hands elsewhere. That's where I'd be looking for data on a new engine.

Having driven several Toyota diesel trucks in other countries, they would have to put some UMMPH in the engine for it to be of use in towing. The Toyoto Hi-lux trucks I drove barely pulled themselves much less 6700# and required high revs to have any power at all. It took almost 2 km to get to 5th gear at sea level and 120 KPH was top speed unless going downhill with a brisk tail wind. As stated, any fuel only has a finite amount of energy in it, you can use it for top end fuel economy or towing capacity dependent upon gearing but not both.

They already announced it will be the 2.8L I-4 TD VM Motori engine, due to be used in the 2016 trucks.
2015 Chevrolet Colorado: First Look - PickupTrucks.com News
"The new Colorado will be offered in three trim levels: Work Truck (base), LT and Z71, with the latter's four-wheel-drive package offering upgraded shocks, bigger wheels and tires, a locking differential, and hill ascent and descent control. The base engine for the first two trim levels will be a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that is preliminarily rated for 193 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque. The V-6 (302 hp, 270 pound-feet of torque) will be familiar to some because it's the same all-aluminum 3.6-liter engine used in everything from Chevrolet's new Impala sedan to the GMC Terrain crossover. The biggest powertrain news is that this new midsize will be the first of its class to get a turbo-diesel option: a U.S.-tuned 2.8-liter inline-four-cylinder Duramax GM has been using overseas. The engine was a joint design between GM and VM Motori several years ago but is now completely owned and used by GM in several global platforms. Although the Duramax name was created as a joint venture with Isuzu, the new engine is solely owned by GM, which no longer has a partnership with VM Motori after Fiat finalized its purchase of the diesel engine company last month."
