Diesel Engine Oil

What I plan to do for my 1025 (with Yanmar engine) is to buy 3 quarts of Castrol Edge at my VW dealer for when I change the 1025's oil. They sell it for $8/qt, which is less than Mobil 1 ESP, and I cannot find any Mobil 1 ESP except on line for nearly $13/qt. Castrol Edge is 5W30. This matches the chart requirement in the owner's manual. Wish I could get 0w30, but they don't formulate it to meet VW's 507 spec.

The only difference between a 0w30 and 5w30 is that the viscous is less at starting, or lower temperature, on the 0w30 but it's the same as running temperature.

AMSOIL makes VW 507spec oil. Not really sure why a VW oil is spec'd for a yanmar but anyhow. They make a full line of synthetic lubes at great prices, shipped to your door. PM me if you want to "price compare"

Up here Petro Canada is another excellent oil, a true synthetic,
Sorry but Petro Canada are one of the pioneers of Group III synthetic basestocks. I guess since castrol won the lawsuit that group III can be called a synthetic (which has changed the marketplace forever) maybe petro canada is now a "true synthetic" what ever that means.

i'm interested to hear this because I never associated Amsoil with great prices in the same sentence. A standard grease gun cartridge of number two grease should cost in the 2 to 6 dollar range. When I see an 8 or 10 dollar price tag on a tube of grease, my skepticism increases as to value. Is the better grease that much better to justify the price?
Amsoil has a very good reputation and if they made a high quality 4 dollar tube of grease, well, I'm all ears.
But ask me to pay ten bucks for it, well, tell me it ain't so Joe...

This synthetic oil issue reminds me of wine. Synthetics can only come from one region, the blends have to be clearly stated as to what their mixture is.

You might want to examine carefully the claim that AMSOIL makes VW 507 spec oil. Last I heard, Amsoil was not actually certified to that spec.

Their web page says:
AMSOIL European Car Formula 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil is formulated to meet or exceed the most demanding European specifications. It is recommended for European gasoline or diesel vehicles requiring any of the following performance specifications:
VW 504.00/507.00

"It is recommended", by who? Amsoil?

Saying "it is recommended" is not the same thing as saying it is certified.

Are you an amsoil distrubutor!?

Amsoil is $11/qt. Mobil 1 ESP is $11-12/qt. I can get Castrol Edge 507 spec at the dealer for $8/qt.

Understood, and I agree.

That situation comes up a lot today. Ex. the Chevron 1000 THF I bought uses the same "Recommended" verbage concerning the Ford spec I need.

What's going on ? One element of this landscape is there has been a very big push from the vehicle OEM's to monetize this oil "approval" process. Some oil companies will pay up, some won't.

I prefer to see actual certifications in place. That said, today, I often find myself walking the affordability line by selecting decent high quality lube products from a reputable supplier that may be only Recommended, rather than Approved.

Amsoil on the retail shelf is pretty expensive. An annual Prefered Customer membership knocks about 25% off retail. I use Amsoil products, but don't sell them.

I also use Chevron, Mobil, Valvoline, Castrol, and other products.

If the grease stays in place 2-5 times longer would that not increase the value?
Pound out resistance and exceptional water washout as well as increased protective seal (keeps more dirt out) will give an overall value compared to the 2 dollar tube of grease.
