Is there any possibility that we could see a picture of that operation?

Do you mean the Honda powered Ford Prefect chassis buggy.

If so, yes I can do but give me a day or two.

I'ts not flash, never been painted but it's been a real back and legs saver.

I'd like to see a photo of that too!!

Has anyone used an airconditioner compressor for this job? Once you have fitted a pressure relief valve and pressure switch, you can turn the drive to the compressor on and off to maintain the desired pressure. Just a thought.

Yes, i had one fitted to my 4wheeler years ago and it was a cinch. Worked very well. Ran it from a spare pulley on the front of the engine, fabricated a mounting bracket to hold the compressor up next to the alternator, and had a small 25 litre tank in the trunk. Ideal for running small air drive tools and for inflating tyres or the kids inflatible boats! I didnt have a pressure switch though, I just had a toggle switch to engage the compressor and when the pressure reached the setpoint on the pressure relief valve (i think it was 8-10 bar?) the valve would blow off through the tell tale and I'd manually shut down the compressor with the switch. I do like the idea of a pressure switch, would save a lot of messing around with manually charging the vessel. Make sure you fit a non return valve on the supply line from the compressor to the tank if you do this though and make sure you use steel lines between the compressor and the tank. That is important.
At the time, I didnt like the idea of having a fully charged compressed air vessel in the truck continuously, so i only filled it when I was on the trail or when I needed air.

Have a look in 4x4wire.com? I think thats where I got the step by step (with photos) on how to do it.

Sure, done all the time. Check out the jeep forums for oba on board air.

Thanks to both. I have had a look at the Jeep forum and have taken a few notes.

I have collected a pile of filters, tanks and regulators from decommissioned equipment at work so I hope I have all that I need except for the compressor.

Jake98 and Blagadan, as promised some pics of the buggy.

The seats are spaced 8' apart as that is the spacing I always plant vines and tie up drip hose.

In one photo you'll see two return springs for the front seat and the air cylinder - none for the rear as yet.

Hard to see in the photos but there's a belt running from the idler shaft (for gearing down) down to the front of the gearbox. When the front seat slides in there is a linkage that automatically tightens the jockey pulley of that belt, to move the buggy along until the seat is slid out at the next or second next vine.

Behind each seat you'll see a 3 x 2" RHS about 1' high, these are fixed - not sliding. They have two right angle frames of about 5' high and wide dropped onto them in summer, these then have 4 30"x 20' sheets of corrugated iron (2 at the back and 2 on top) attached to provide shade.

Have considered mounting all of this to one of my little Kubotas, to avoid all the belts and pulleys and rust. Figured out in my mind how to do most of it but gave up when I thought of the roof which could cause a Kub to tip over or in a gust of wind, blow away.

The gearbox is original Ford Prefect 3 speed, but it jumps out of second, have had a couple attemrts to fix this but have failed.
For the most part 1st is good for down the rows (slow walk) and third for running to and from the blocks (jogging speed or revved up, running) .

Now that is a thing of great beauty. You gotta love it. Jake

Most ingenious! Good on you, mate! I really like to see examples of putting stuff together in ways never originally intended in order to nicely fill a need.

Oh, and my guess is worn synchronizers in the tranny are the root cause of not staying in 2nd gear.

Thanks Patrick, for your kind words.

I can't even recall whether the g/box is synchro, but why should a worn synchro cause it to jump out of gear?
It doesn't neccessarily happen on initial engagement, more likely when it is pulling a bit harder.

Over the years I have had four different trans with jumping out of second gear problems. The first three all had worn synchros. All tended to jump out when first back dragged and then put under load. Currently have a VW dune buggy starting to show the same symptoms but haven't opened it up to do anything about it.

Perhaps my annecdotal "evidence" is the result of coincidence and is not well related to the mainstream.
