I am in charge of the fuel at our city maintenance facility and recently learned more than I ever wanted to know about microbes in diesel fuel. We have a 3000 gallon steel tank and that lasts about a month. We started to see brown slime in filters and an almost rusty type substance refered to as coffee grounds in some articles on the top of the filter where the fuel enters.
We had just gotten a fleet magazine with pictures of this excact problem. I called our fuel supplier and he took samples direct from the tank and after our 10 micron dispenser filter. Positive on both for microbes. So it went in all of our vehicles also. The tank was filled as full as possible and treated with biocide. Now we buy our diesel with an additive to prevent this. Apparently the microbe problem is worse with the ultra low sulphur diesel. We got lucky and cought it pretty early. I am going to pick up an additive for my L3400 that kills microbes because it can't hurt. I am normally not in favor of additives but this has been a learning experience. If you are bored Google diesel fuel microbes and start reading. It will scare you. Brian
