Oil & Fuel Diesel fuel additive

   / Diesel fuel additive #21
I use power service in the gray bottle, have 911 in red bottle on hand, just in case.
My equipment uses very little fuel. And I don't run full throttle like some think is nessasary. I'm running a excavator most of the time.

To me its cheaper than fuel pumps and injectors.

I was just talking to a mechanic friend of mine. He said to be careful not to use an additive that contains alcohol, which some do. He said it will ruin the seals in the injection pump over time. Something to think about next time your buying additive.

lectro88; have you used the 911, just curious, I used it once and it did nothing, fuel still gelled

Used it 1nce. Realized I really didn't need it in our climate.
I've read on here and other forums 911 works.

I have not experienced gelling nor do I know anybody who has.

On the other hand, there are 2 things to think about with diesel in my opinion.
1*1. gelling/waxing from extreme cold with summer blend
2*2. long term storage of diesel in large tanks for more then a year- algae can grow and plug filters.
1*My BX manual says I don't need winter blend until the temp. hits 14 degrees.
Since we seldom get many days with temps. that low
I can pretty much get by with running winter or summer blends Jan through Dec.
2*That's why I have a filter on this rig.

Jay,
3*I have always wondered about using "too much" since calculating how much fuel is still in the tank is not an exact science.
4*So you think there is no issue?

3*l aways dump a quart of PS in the 55 gallon drum when it goes empty then fill it up with fuel.
Eliminates all the guess work and wondering.
4*I've never had any.

That's what I use also. If for no other reason than I only use probably 30-35 gallons per year. But when I buy diesel I get it about 15 gallons at a time and
5* Keep it 1n a 15 gallon container with a 12 volt pump and service station type hose/nozzle, so sometimes the fuel sits a few months. The tractor is always stored inside, but no heat in the building.
Somewhere along the line I calculated it at 2.5 ounces per 5 gallons so that's what I've always run. So far, so good.
5* Got any pictures of your 15 gallon container with the the 12 volt pump ?

JI use the same stuff... and have always wondered about using "too much" since calculating how much fuel is still in the tank is not an exact science.

Why would there be an issue? I'm only doubling the mix ratio. A quart treats 100 gallons - I use it to treat 50. I meter the additive by making marks on the back of the bottle, then I pour it straight out of the bottle from one mark to the next. Tenths (~3.2oz) make for easy to see and easy to meter amounts.

Horsepower's Theorem applies: "Too much is just enough."

Just as you said "Mixed responses". I have been following this forum for quite a while now and TripleR you always seem to have good, solid advice, along with many others. In this situation, since nobody really knows for sure, I think I will go with the additive. The main reason is, and I should have mentioned this in my OP, I only put about 75 hrs a year on the tractor and it sits unused through the winter, so how much fuel am I really burning. Ten dollars worth of additive will last me 3 years or more. And since I have not heard of any bad experiences with it, I think its definitely worth the peace of mind. Thanks everyone

I can certainly understand that.

We use filters on our bulk storage which aren't practical when using cans etc. and I am always willing to re evaluate.

Did you use it before it gelled? That is not what the 911 is made for. It is made to reliquify already gelled fuel in an emergency. It is alcohol and shouldn't be run otherwise IMHO..

filter on your feul setup will not help gelling in your tank.

1. not everyone has your constant warm temps and the option of using summer blend in winter.
2. filter on your feul setup will not help gelling in your tank.
3. not everyone has or wants your setup for the BX refueling solution.

Well after 10 years running my B2910 in temps down to -30F, I finally had a fuel problem today. I buy my off road diesel 30 gallons at a time. The last time I bought was before the distributor switched to winter-mix fuel in November. I had put some Power service(white bottle) in at the time. Well today I drove the tractor out of the barn and started working, then no power. I look at my fuel filter and it is one big glob of gelled fuel! OK it's Sunday. No way to get a new filter. So I go to the gas station and get 5 gallons of street diesel and run into a logger. He told me to head up to Walmart and get Power Service 911(red bottle) and soak the filter in it. It worked like a champ. The gel melted away, I put some of the 911 into the tank and she ran all day. I drained what was left of the fuel in her back to the 30 gal tank, replaced it with the road diesel and have learned my lesson- Don't use fuel bought before November 1 during the winter. :) I'll pick up a new filter tomorrow.
