Diesel fuel question

Around here you have to be a registered farm business to buy farm (off road) diesel. No exceptions. But you can buy furnace oil no questions asked. 30 cents less per litre (almost $1.20 per gallon) but you have to additize it to bring it up to road fuel quality. It runs great in the tractor.

There’s no questions asked to buy red fuel here. If I’ve got the tractor or lawnmower loaded I’ll usually run by the station and fill it up.

As said earlier farmer doesn’t mean squat. If you are traveling on the roads with a registered vehicle, you have to use taxed fuel, unless your government.

We have big farms around here that haul products, they even have farm plates on there tractor trailers, they have to run on road fuel.

Like was also said earlier, there all stories though, Idk of anyone personally that has been caught, and idk of any fellow inspector around here that’s ever nailed someone for it.

Back to OP, I wanted to buy off road for my new holland instead of paying the tax, mines a 2017 with DPF, as long as it’s ULSD there’s no problem, but I couldn’t find anywhere to buy it, so I just went to the local store and filled the storage tank there, and I just claimed it on my taxes.

Around here, fuel oil and off road diesel are the same, the guy who fills our tank fills both the heating oil and the off road diesel tanks out of the same tank on the truck. Both are listed as being #2 diesel on the receipt.

Farmers don’t get a free pass to drive vehicles with red fuel in them on the road.
Correct. Unless its a tractor or other piece of farm equipment that does not drive on the road (except to move from field to field) even farmers are not allowed to use off road fuel on the road.

Here in Quebec only a stationary engine (generator) is exempt from road taxes.
A farm tractor with fuel gets fined even it said tractor never even crossed a road.

Also every vehicle (defined as being able to transport the operator) needs to be plated, be it an 'off road plate' (P) or a 'W' (work plate)'
The farce then is by definition all riding lawnmowers should be plated.

Contractors fought and partially won as they get away with the P plate which is a very affordable fee. (was $25.00)
I say won as the W (work) plate was dependent on the vehicle weight (D9 dozer is rather heavy).

SO, if in Quebec and your lawnmower is diesel powered you are are wide open to fines especially if caught crossing the road with heating oil in the tank and not plated. Quebec sait faire!

Haha. In Montreal a business owner can get fined if they have English on their signage that doesn稚 meet strict criteria. It has to be below the French and must be a specified percentage smaller than the French. And yes, they have a special group of enforcement officers. Now let痴 talk about the the Maple syrup cartel. 😀

wow this got derailed !!! as someone who burns probably 25 gallons of fuel a year, the question has nothing to do with cost savings. I was just asking if there was a benefit to using the fuel for longevity. but thanks for the input.
