Diesel Fuel Transfer Tank

I think in TN you need to have a tax card from the state to put it in containers/tanks. At least that's what I am figuring out. My coop sells red diesel with the tax applied unless you have the card.

I can see it now. Someone forgets the tax card and has to pay full price so they think "What the heck, I paid the tax so I'll just fill up the pickup too. NP, I have the receipt." Oops.

At my local farmers CO-OP in Western TN they have red diesel but signage says illegal to put in a container- ie has to go right into tractor-

Wow, I've never heard of that. Bet they don't get much business for red fuel. Around here any sizeable farmer has a bed tank in their truck or pulls a fuel trailer. I use a bed tank.

In Missouri I applied at my local provider for farm tax exemption. So when I use their Petrol Card at their stations they don't charge me road tax on red fuel. I think it's somewhere around .50 cents per gallon.

So, I just picked up a 100-gallon Better Built transfer tank and a 12-volt pump at Northern Tool today. I'm going to do what I've seen other folks do, and mount the tank on a pallet so I can lift it in and out of the truck with the pallet forks on my tractor. I finished getting the pump all plumbed into the tank this afternoon and I'll attach the tank to a pallet tomorrow.

I had a pallet mounted diesel transfer tank in my pickup for many years. It worked well but I eventually got sick of having to load & unload it every time it needed a refill. the tank took up too much space to just leave it in the truck.

A couple of years ago, I installed this rig and now pump home heating oil from my 550 gal storage tank:

This way, the fuel gets delivered and I no longer have to drive down to pick it up.

Not practical for those who don't heat with an oil fired furnace though.
