Ooooh! We're catching up to the posts on the mower deck cleaning thread! Between that & this, we're in dire need of a chemist. I suppose the only way to rectify our conundrum is to keep our machinery in heated garages. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't know if we need a chemist. Chevron, Mobil, and Amoco/BP list the cloud piont, pour point sulpher and so on. Some fuels have more wax than others and will gel at a higher temp. Furnace oil is off road use and sold for high sulfer off road. you can buy: kerosene, Jet fuel, #1D, #2D high sulpher, #2D low sulpher, Blended #2D which is about 25% #1D, diesel fuel with lower cloud points, premium low sulpher with additives. It has been many years since I worked for Shell and Amoco so I am going from memory on the fuel grades. The fuels do not all come from the same pipe at the bulk terminal even though a dealer may use some of these interchangeably. The standard cetane is about 40 for #2 and 50+ for Amoco premier. Cold starting is improved as the fuel is a bit more volitile.

My home heating oil tank sits outside, the 80-100' of copper lines leading to the house are also exposed here and there. I was a little worried about the heating oil this winter, because we had such a cold one (negitive temps at night) but I never had a problem. What ever the winter mix is worked.
When I was growing up we use to use the oil out of our outside heating tank for our JD430 garden tractor. Never had a problem winter or summer.

Good question - something I've been wondering too.
I have a 1000 gal oil tank for my house which I fill every summer. Seems a shame to have all that fuel here and go to town with my 5 gal cans for tractor fuel.
You're not going to town getting tractor fuel.
You are bringing the same thing home in the 5 gallon cans that you already have at home in the 1000 gallon tank.
It's not only a shame it's also senseless.
